Hi there,
Just bought an E71 after many years aaway from the Symbian scene (had an N95 over a year ago then moved over to Blackberry).
Anyway, just getting used to it again and am generally very happy but have 2 questions (for now!).
Firstly, the std. calendar application doesn't seem to show the location of my appointments, either in the home screen or in the calendar view. This is a killer for me as my day is filled with meetings. I downloaded a 3rd party calendar trial and it showed the locations so they are being synchronized but surely the default calendar can show this critical information?
Secondly, I want to set up my connections in the most efficient way so that whilst I am in the house, it uses my home WiFi network but when away it will use the mobile netowrk then switch back again when I get home. How do I set this up? I use mfe for push email so this is a real deal for me.
Thanks in advance.
Mike
Welcome to the E71!
I can think of only one way to show the location using the vanilla application: show your agenda, which you can do by selecting the Active Standby bar (if you use this) or from the application itself. You can change the default view.
For the second query you need to download a handy little application, SmartConnect. This may be in your applications-to-download menu but if not, run a Google search for the application. Their website is www.birdstep.com and version 1.2.61 is (as far as I know) the latest available, plus it's licenced to run on the E71. SmartConnect allows you to set up one or more connection groups. You can give one or more WLANs priority and use your GPRS / UTMS modem as the last in the list, so no WLAN, it'll use your mobile operator service.
This works well on my E71 with the caveat that whilst I use Mail for Exchange, I don't use it in push mode. I have a dim and distant memory that when MfE is using the GPRS connection it doesn't want to let to so that SmartConnect can "upgrade" to a WLAN. I may be wrong here! Moving out of a set up WLAN works a treat. I use SmartConnect in conjunction with Devicescape's Easy Wi-Fi although I have only used Easy Wi-Fi a couple of times, since most of the time I'm using the GPRS / UTMS or my home network (I have infinite data* via T-Mobile UK so my only issue is that the 3G modem uses more power than WLAN, which uses more power than the 2G GPRS connection).
Hopefully the above makes some sense and is useful! :icon14:
*unlimited subject to their fair use policy of course! 🙄
And one more questions!
I have various family birthdays in my calendar as repeating appointments (there are not in contacts as I don't need the people as contacts). I have a reminder in outlook for them but on my phone, the reminder comes on at midnight and wakes me up!
I can change the reminder tone to off but then I don't get reminders during the day of other appointments.
Is there a way (through the phone or a piece of software) that can change the calendar reminder tone to off at night then turn it on in the morning?
Yes; that's extremely annoying and it happens to me too. You can get a profile manager (Handy Profiles spring to mind) that can silence the handset or parts of the alert system at night and reawaken them in the morning by switching profiles for you.
I didn't want to do this as when I wake up I would be likely to just click "dismiss" rather than realise I had a week to go until Charlie's birthday, or similar, so I have changed my reminders to go off at nine o'clock. They are no longer all-day appointments, though - not ideal, but works well enough for me.
Hi Dervman,
I looked at a profile switching app but it switches from one profile to another and I couldn't see where, in the profile, to turn the calendar alarms on or off, I could only see the setting in the calendar application itself.
Good point: my workaround was to silence the device. That means you won't hear somebody calling you at midnight either, though. :con?
I would suggest using Y-Profiler application, can get here:

It's great for swapping profiles by time. I set mine up so that everyday at 22:00 the phone switches to my "meeting" profile (no tones or vib) and everday at 07:00 the phone switches to my "general" profile. The phone wakeup alarm will sound during this quiet period, so that I do still wake up.
I never make appointments with alarms within this time period so I'm not sure it they would sound, I must test.
I downloaded the birdstep smartconnect software through download! and configured it, but whenever I change the connection on a program (mfe or browser) to the one created in smartconnect, it tells me the software is not licenced to my device! Any suggestions?
I've heard of this happening too but so far I have been lucky. I think the secret was to uninstall, manually delete the BirdStep folder from the device using the File Manager, then reinstall. But that is after a firmware update...😎
