Why do Nokia keep doing this to me?

16 replies · 6,509 views · Started 09 April 2009

My name is Paul, and I am an Nokiaholic ...

This is the right place isnt it? For people who really should be able to wait in perfect patience for the latest "must have, can't live my life without" phone, but just cant?

Why do they keep teasing me? It was the same with the N95 .. loads of photos, videos, official websites .. months before I could actually get one. Same with the N96. It's just plain mean.

I want an N97! I want one right now! Stamps feet!

😉

BTW This post is just an excuse so I can have the first post in the N97 forum as well as the E75 one hahaha

I dont have high hopes for the N97. Its release will be around the same time as The Iphone2, Touch Pro 2 and Samsung Omnia HD (cant remember the new name). My current contact has run out and im on a rolling contract until these devices come out.

Iphone2 - If apple make any changes to the already amazing interface then its going to be an excellent device. I suspect they will bump up the spec so this is definaly on my list

Touch Pro 2 - I dont really see anything too amazing about the spec but Windows 6.5 looks impressive so its on my list

Samsung Omnia HD - OLED Capactive Screen, this is going to make for some excellent web experience i think this phone will be definaly turn heads. Also an 8mega pix camera.

N97 - Correct me if i am wrong but i dont really see anything that impressive or new about the N97. Sure its got 32GB of internal memory but thats about it. It just looks like a re-packaged N95 to me. There isnt anything which stands out as a WOW factor in terms of spec (or interface for that matter). Sure we have widgets but is that really going to be a good reason to get this device? They qwerty keyboard doesnt look like its going to be easy to use, i mean they have an off centered space bar which is just weird :con?

Personally im looking at the Samsung Omnia HD, the N97 just doesnt have anything new about it which will make an improvement over my current device, the E90. Nokia have a habit of releasing devices which only have a slight improvement. My only reservation about the Samsung is the firmware updates and support for the device. Also that fact that ill loose Nokia applications such as Nokia Maps is alittle worrying along with Nokia PC Suite.

Roll on summer and let the games begin 😃

I have the Samsung innov8 and can tell you that the Samsung PC Suite software is identical to Nokia's, just with a different logo. Unfortunately they really have had very poor firmware updates. When one finally came out, it took hours upon hours to download as it was coming from an impossibly slow server, of course you had to leave the phone connected all this time. Then the first new firmware failed to do much to fix anything. A second new firmware came out as soon as a week later, which supposedly fixed a few major bugs, but all the people who had already upgraded to the first new firmware seem to be locked out of getting the latest one. This happened in December and still hasnt been sorted.

There is an over-the-air firmware update system built into the phone but its never been utilised.

The omnia hd is about as big as a bus, thats one reason to avoid it, Samsungs implementation of S60 is normally way inferior to Nokia's.
Its only noteworthy feature is HD video and thats that.

srw985, can the Samsung software let you share the phones internet connection like the Nokia one? I use this feature all the time and its a definat MUST for me!

MWEB - Looking at the reviews of the Omnia HD, it appears to be identical to the 5800 OS just with things named differently.

My experience with all other Nokia devices and most Samsungs leave me unconvinced on the latter's S60 support.
It might be decent enough, but its previous track record suggests otherwise 😊

My guess it is a huge marketing ploy to hype up interest so that we are all gagging for it when it is released.

Unfortunately, I think that this is showing signs of backfiring. It has been in the pipeline or way too long and we are starting to loose interest especially when there are bette options on the way now from other manufacturers.

I was SO keen to get an N97 but I got fed up waiting and also hugely disappointed with the price hype so I have gone for the 5800 for now.

Nokia just doesn't get it.

Let me tell you a story...back in 1977 I obtained the world's first cartridge-programmable video game--the Fairchild Channel F. It had a library of cartridges available to play various games and was very advanced compared to the only other competitor at the time--Pong. Cartridges ran about $20-29 each.

After opening the box of the game, there was a registration card like most products, but on the card it said "send in for a free gift to use with your Channel F".

At the time, I supposed that they were going to send me a free cartridge so I wait--and waited--and waited, all the while not buying any cartridges because I didn't want to buy the one that I'd get for free.

After six months, the "free gift" arrived...a lint-free dusting cloth!!

Talk about disappointment...the problem is that most consumers probably waited like me and didn't buy any cartridges while expecting a free one so the product was discontinued within a year.

Nokia...teases and teases and teases...getting expectations up. Meanwhile, you stop buying up software and offerings for your old phone/PDA because you're expecting a new one. This really messes up the after-market sales.

No wonder companies like AT&T don't field any of the better Nokia phones--you can count on the timing of sales to be a flop.

Hi,

First of all some of us started to compare physical QWERTY devices with only touch screen devices. Mistake!

Nokia N97 isn't a big thing? Maybe not. But iPhone us a big thing? Samsung Omnia HD is a big thing? 8 Mp or 12 Mp camera without optical zoom is a big thing? Of course not.

Just tihink a bit everybody! We have reached this beautiful year last year when the biggest mobile manufacturers can put all the cool features into their devices that most of us can imagine. There is no more big difference! Am I right?
The difference is the Operating system and it isn't. What can you do with an iPhone what you can't do with a WinMo or S60 phone? The features are almost the same. I think iPhone and S60 is easier to use than WinMo.
The form and design can be different but not much. Every brand has an iPhone-like model, a communicator-like model and a blackberry-like model.

So if you like Nokia N97 then just wait for it 'cause you won't get more from the others. You will get something faster and that's it.
Maybe the iPhone2 will have a beautiful design (i'm sure it will) and that's important for you? Go for it.

But don't compare devices for different "audience"! The N97 was not made to fight against iPhone. It was the 5800. The Omnia HD is made to fight against the iphone together with many others...

The N97 is for the techie people, who needs all the best technologies packed into one device with the possibility of fast and easy typing, emailing, twittering, facebooking etc. A big plus with Nokia is it's support and the S60 OS. If you' ve checked the leaked WinMo 6.5 screenshot, you will realize, that th iPhone, S60, Blackberry, Android and WinMo UI will look identically at the and of this year. Everybody pushes for Web services, widgets integrated into the UI.

And if somebody really want to buy some BIG THING, than go for the THOSIBA TG01 with the 1 Ghz Snapdragon CPU ticking inside. That's a big thing.

Cheers,

Don't get me wrong...I'm a Symbian fan and have pre-ordered an N97.

I am just having a very hard time waiting for it to be delivered. First it was promised March 23rd, then April 9th, now May 13th....who knows when it might be delivered. :frown:

As far as phone performance goes...my Nokia 9300 outperforms the iPhone in many things--in real-world side-by-side tests. It's just that after 3 years the "coolness" factor has worn off a bit (as well as paint on the cover!).

I'm one of those techies who just "has-to-have" an all-in-one device with me for ready use: email, messaging, calls, camera, GPS, document/spreadsheet editing, e-library at my fingertips.

I have two (2) Nokia N800's and those have taken the place of my laptop computer for general knock-about use. With the N97, I'll have everything in one "converged" device. 😊

I totaly agree with you.

I would like to take my hands on a Nokia N97 right now, but we still have to wait.

Nokia realized, that we need touchscreen smartphone, one we can upgrade from N95, N96 or E90. They announced early to tell us: "Guys! We're working on it, hold on, don't go to the competirors!". The fact that we have to wait until june (Vodafone confirmed june) means that Nokia want's to make this device realy good. On the other hand Nokia has to produce a big amount of devices to spread around the world before it can be launched.

I'm also one of the techie guys. I have an E90, had before 9500. I was waiting long time ago to hear that Nokia is finaly ready to make touchscreen smartphones. I knew that there should be a reason why we have to wait so long. Now the 5800 is out and the N97 is 2 months away only. And the screen technology of the N97 will be the thing what we were waiting for.

Hold on folks! It worth to wait!

@rdcinhou: I'm with you on the waiting part, and june can't come early enough. The dates you mention, though, were never given by Nokia but rather rumors circling around. Nokia itseld always said first half of 2009 and then later specified June as launch date. Therefore the N97 was never delayed but is rather right on track.
That doesn't make waiting easier, though 😉

But do you think N97 is worthy upgrade for E90 user?

I drool over the memory capacity & the touch screen, widgets,N series goodies...but its simply not a Communicator.

The real test of whether the N97 is a "Communicator" is whether it can handle the volume/types of email that the 9300 could.

I have read reviews by E90 owners who say that the 9300 far outperformed the E90 regarding email handling.

Nokia sent me another "order confirmation" email on my N97. Checked AMEX--charge hasn't posted yet. More teasing?

Maybe it's not a communicator, but worth it to change to. With N97 youw ill be able to mange groups, write emails on QWERTY keymat, access anything on the web. Plus you have touch screen, new home screen.

You have only one screen, with all the info you need, eve if this screen's resolution is lower then the E90's.

Cheers,

The N97 for me has everything but one thing.

It obviously has Bluetooth, WiFi, Touch Screen, GPS, FM Transmitter, Touch Screen, 32 Gig Memory, TV Out. It has loads of installable applications, various Google apps, Nokia SportsTracker, and I would hope for DivX Mobile to be updated soon for these devices.

But I think the problem for me with this device, it still lacks a "wow" factor. It is built on S60 5th Edition, and for me, it just does not translate at all well to a touch screen interface.

However the problem with things like the iPhone and Google Android, is that although they have the "wow" factor, they lack on some of the crucial bits.

Google Android does not have SIP built in, does not have Bluetooth and it appears GPS takes an age to lock.

So although S60 is a drawback, I think it's positive in that loads of people do support it.
