It's time for another editorial bemoaning the fact that as Symbian OS gets older, and fancier ways are added for the manufacturers to transition between screens, some of the greatest functionality is removed. This week I want to point out the sorry tale of taking screenshots on your smartphone. Settle down for another 'once upon a time'...
Read on in the full article.
So, you believe everyone inside Nokia who knew about this, and still let it happen is a FOOL? Dude, think!
at the risk of missing the point- i just use screenshot for the s60: i downloaded to grab screenshots of latitude in action.
I go back to the series 3a and steve's first gis package and the quality of the material being produced from the 3lib and aas stables has been consistently high. Well done!
The original N-Gage way back in 2003 came with a built-in screenshot application, yet it wasn't included on subsequent S60 devices. Whose bright idea was to create it, then remove it?
And why isn't (for example) Antony Pranata's Screenshot included on current devices?
If I remember correctly the 9300 also had a keystroke to copy the screen. Does it work on the E90? And where did html e-mail go? It's in Nokia Messaging now. But how long did it take them to reintroduce a feature they had removed:con??
I loved communicators until 9300i. They had shortcut keys, real menus etc. S60 versions are pretty much as any other s60 phone with better screen. (using e71 now)
Nokia should offer more complete package with s60 as default. Why there is no timer or stopwatch in s60 as standard? Both series 40 and iphone os have those basic applications.
Built-in vs. 3rd party? Yes, I would love to see it built in natively. Even signing a deal with Antony Pranata as someone else mentioned to have his Screenshot app preinstalled on every S60 would be effing brilliant. Best screensnap works for 5th Edition, though I still prefer Pranata's app.
HTML is and has been on every S60 device. Open the damn attachment.
Thing is, there are tons of problems like this on S60: why is the calculator so buggy, why cant messaging download/attach files of any format, poor gallery, illogical menu arrangement, no stopwatch, no inbuilt file manager, no screenshot, no xenon flash(sorry!) etc.
In fact, some older apps have been removed, possibly for code simplification. The problem maybe in Nokia not listening to its customers. If they could have a decent feedback with a more open approach, things would be different.
Surely Ewan, the Ctrl + shift + fn-k example was damn impressive. Must have felt good showing up a nokia guy 😊
Arcade:
Illogical menu arrangement... this was much worse on older phones, but newer models are much more logical. The 5800's menus are very well structured indeed, with icons organised by function into themes (so all the audio stuff goes into one "Music" folder for example). The 5800's settings menu is also much more logically organised.
File Manager: There IS an in-built file manager on S60 called File Manager. It doesn't allow access to hidden files which is perhaps what you meant, but it allows access to all the folders that an ordinary user would want to see. I suspect this is a deliberate move to stop people accidentally deleting something important that might mess up their phone, as almost all OSes have similar restrictions on viewing files.
Gallery varies from phone to phone, Nseries devices generally have a much better gallery than others, but even the numbered phone galleries vary as newer models have a preview grid rather than list.
Xenon flash is a hardware feature decided by manufacturers, and nothing to do with S60 or Symbian.
Messaging attachments for SMS messages depend on what your phone network allows, and you can attach quite a range of file types now. Or did you mean e-mail?
Older apps being removed... I can't think of any (apart from the Screenshot app) which I miss. As a matter of fact there are quite a few they could dump right now, such as the redundant Landmarks app which Nokia Maps has made totally obsolete.
Tzer2,
One app that was removed that I really miss is Muvee from the S60 2nd days, and the video editor that came on the N95. Nokia seriously stopped creativity with videos when they decided not to include any video manipulating/editing software on their new Nseries devices.
And about Landmarks,
If Nokia removes Landmarks to leave the function in Nokia Maps, it would be a total kill for me. Why? Because you can't send your landmarks from inside Nokia Maps, but you can send them from the Landmarks app. This means that all my favorite locations would get lost if I wanted to format my device, or switch devices, if Landmarks was removed. Not nice.
On the other side, the most obsolete apps in my opinion are IM and 3D-tones, to name some.
I have noticed a few bugs in Antony Pranata's Screenshot app. Probably the reason why it has not been included ?
As for including their own app, I guess Nokia skipped on that, taking developers like Antony, for granted ?
Strategically, leaving gaps and holes to be filled is a way of stimulating 3rd party development activity.
I also miss a timer and stopwatch.

Interesting trivia: Series 60 first came out without any sort of file mananger, it was designed that way so that users couldn't mess at all with the files. At least the first two devices, 7650 and 3650 were like thia. But that was something that was quickly added!
I hope that Nokia leave the Landmarks application alone. I just transferred all of my Landmarks from a Samsung G810 (where Nokia Maps won't work) onto my new Nokia N85. I want the possibility to go to another S60 device, which may not be Nokia and still use my landmarks in an independant navigation program. I don't want to be tied just to Nokia.
The Landmarks apps isn't just used by Nokia Maps, but is a central repository of landmarks that 3rd party apps can use as well. For example, since both Google Maps and Nokia Maps can access the landmarks app, I can use the superior location search capabilities of Google Maps to find a location quickly, save it as a landmark and then open up Nokia Maps to get voice navigation to the location.
I simply loved my 9300. My current E90 turned out a daily continuous let-down.
