'0' in Download! now really free

Nokia's Download! system, integrated into every S60 device, has finally had one of my long-standing bugbears fixed. Never mind that the whole thing is now seemingly administered by Jamster (explaining all the '1 of 3' 'costs' listed throughout some of the app pages), the core 'Applications' section now has freeware marked as '0' (i.e. costs nothing), while trialware and demos now appear, less misleadingly (they used to say '0' too), as 'Try for free'. There's also the new 'Payment in application', in readiness for Ovi. See below.

Read on in the full article.

A useful improvement. I was getting annoyed downloading stuff just to fing out if it was trialware or not.

Shame three arn't more free apps there.

Just tried it. Not too accurate on the 5800. AccuWeather shows as trial (it's free) Adobe shows as free but it's a trial...

I'll be happy when they fix the fact that you can't uninstall it

Will the Nokia Ovi store have free apps like Download! does? I would be seriously annoyed if i had something permanently on my phone that wanted me to have to pay for everything.

Yes there'll be free apps in the Ovi Store. Difficult to know what the ratio will be though.

I've been getting "Catalog update failed", (details: General system error) for the last two weeks on my E90. Don't know if its because i'm out of my home country I'm in the US, but based in the UK). The NAM 5800 i'm setting up for a friend seems quite happy with the Application option though.

its not you with your e90. it has been like that for the last month in the US on my e90...on both an ATT sim card and a T-mobile sim card.

...and it works fine on my e90, in Finland, so I guess it's a US thing.

I find this new 'price' notification a mixed blessing. I think it doesn't allow for things which are free for basic features, but can be upgraded - I don't think 'try for free' covers that, or at least it isn't accurate. For example, Easy Wifi says 'Try for free', but it's free...I guess you can buy some extra services or something and they're trying to 'warn' the user with the 'Try for free' assignation.

I've also been getting this error for a few months on 'Applications' on my E90, even before upgrading to 300.34.84. Any ideas?

The content publishers can set any price they want including zero.

However, to begin with only commercial publishers are being allowed to register so I'd expect it to be dominated by pay-for content when it launches.

Hopefully Nokia will open it up to non-commercial publishers as soon as possible.

I think this isn't accurate. IINM, publishers will be able to select a price from a range of pre-set prices, which includes zero. Am I wrong?

If I'm correct, I'd be interested in what the minimum price other than zero is...I'd heard it was quite high (from a Chinese point of view).

Ovi Pricing is in pre-set prices.

As far as I know these are (in Euro) 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 40 , 50, 60, 80, 100

However these will vary slightly by market due to restrictions of operator billing (which ins some countries does not match the above icrements). Any price of 15 Euro or greater is credit card only (and this threshold may be less in some markets).

Update, back in the UK and it still craps out, both via an 02 3g connection and an 02 Broadband connection.

Could you clarify a bit?

I'm curious if these prices are what the end-user pays, or what the developer gets?

Are the prices set in Euro and then somehow converted to other currencies, or set in multiple currencies? What will be the effects of exchange rates?

1 Euro is a bit high for a minimum price, IMO. At the moment, it equates to 8.8 RMB (China). That sort of price might be fine for an application and even some content (movies for example), but for much content, it is way too high. I think we'd prefer to have the option of charging even less than 1RMB, with the intention of making high volume sales via the phone bills.
