Hi all, I have recently just got a n79 and so far it seems like a nice phone (although I previously had the less than impressive WM Sony X1).
When I bought the phone it was locked to t-mobile UK but I was able to get an unlock code for this to use my Vodafone sim card. I also changed the product key to Euro1 generic and updated the firmware using nokia's updater. This seems to have worked but I have had 2 small 'issues':
1. The internet icon in the main menu (5 key position) is still called web'n'walk the t-mobile internet program. Is this just what the nokia browser has been named (and can it be changed) or is it a separate t-mobile application (and can it be uninstalled).
2. The multimedia key (at the left side of the menu button) does not seem to do anything anymore. Before the de-brand it brought up a carousel menu, but now the screen just goes black then returns to what screen it was on before the button press. Do I need to assign this key somewhere or can I get a similar menu to what I had before?
I am also curious to know if I can modify the items in the main menu, although I think a search on this forum might give me some answers on that!
Any help would be much appreciated! 😊
1. I believe Web N Walk is a specific browser made for T-Mobile. I think it's based on something like Opera Mini. Well it used to be anyway.
I think you should double check your product code has actually changed to the EURO 1 code. You might find that the product code didn't successfully change on the phone itself.
I would suggest you check Nokia PC Suite, and Nokia Software Updater are fully upto date.
If i were you though, i would only backup the content you need saving, and not installed apps on your phone as you might have been restoring the Web N walk by mistake after doing the update.
Finally, after doing all the above, run the software update again, and if you're told you have the current version, then try reinstalling it.
Hope this helps.
Hi, yeah it definatly changed product code and used the latest update software. The t-mobile splash screen was removed as well as all their icons. I was using the web n walk browser and it actually isnt too bad, I will probably install the latest opera mini though so if I could remove web n walk it could free up some memory.
Could anyone advise about modifying my main menu?
Hi smc,
I was also looking to debrand my n79. We're you able to do this with NSS as I read that the current NSS wasn't able to detect the N79?:icon4:
I will double check what software I used to change the product code for you this evening, NSS wasn't able to read the phone at all.
I'd also love to know how you changed it as NSS isn't working for me either. I've read a few posts about something call JAF, not sure how effective/easy it will be. Any help/ideas?
Yes it was JAF that I used, pretty sure I had to run some sort of emulator program as well. Was simple enough to change the code.
