n95 used as a modem

I have a Vista Laptop and a Nokia N95-3. I have a $15/mth data plan with AT&T for unlimited access with the N95. AT&T says I have to upgrade my data plan to $60/mth in order to tether.

Question: If I can access the internet with the phone (for $15), and my PC is tethered via USB to the phone, then why do I need the upgrade plan to access the internet with the PC?

So that they don't charge you for all the data you download to the pc. They can tell by the browser id that you're tethered.

My $15/mth is unlimited. Are you saying they are assuming I will download more data tethered? On a prior phone, I purchased a one-time $30 package that allowed me to tether without the additional up-fee. Is that available on the N95?

You are breaking the Terms and Conditions by tethering with the $15 plan, hence you need a more expensive plan to not be breaking the Terms and Conditions.

I have that same $15/month plan. I just use the app JoikuSpot. It uses your 3G connection and converts your phone into a wireless hotspot that you can connect to with your computer. As far as I know I have not been charged extra on my monthly bill or anything for doing so.
