Activity window?

I have installed an ipod theme, and numberous themes, and they look good with the activity window open (on the pictures). But on my m600i, i just have the navigation bar going down the left hand side of my screen, on the main page. Im just wondering if mine is an older version of the phone without the activity window, or if there is anyway of opening it, as i cannot find a way to switch to it on the phone.

I think its because its the basic factory settings, it doesnt have UIQ 3 on, and i cant seem to update it with sony ericsson updater, yet i follow the instructions. (Turn on, hold c, plug usb lead in). Is there any other way of installing UIQ3, right onto the basic factory settings?
