Nokia N96 firmware updated to v20.050

So even the N96 gets an update to version 20, but the N85 and N79 are all but forgotten😞, I'd say it's unfair, but maybe Nokia have a reason for this (financial perhaps). Anyway, it's good to see they still care about the N96, maybe it can finally live up to it's potential.

Unregistered, the N96 came out some time before the N85 and N79, so it's pretty natural for the N96 to get an update first.

N96 update done! Let�s wait and see if it make some improvements, on, a until now, poor, very poor phone... with good screen. I hope, because the flagship of Nokia it�s one of the weakest phones🙄

So far so good, my N96 is a different device now, it feels much more responsive in all areas of operation and much more stable. Getting connected to Wifi is now painless which was previously a problem for me. I would go as far to say that it is now a pleasant device to use! (Given the limitations of the small screen and no qwerty)

just curious to know as I am looking to get a secondhand N96 off eBay, is the device operating much faster now? i.e. is it more responsive and operation speed much faster, just like the N78 and N81 had from their updates to v11/v12 to v20/v21?

wow after updating it feels like i have a brand new device for free , its feels so different it hards to put into words.
If the n96 was like this 9 moths ago on release ihave the feeling its reputation would not have been half as damaged

It looks another phone indeed but bluetooth streaming still bad. It gets interrupting every 4 to 5 sec. Why did they forgot this? It is important, very important. I for one own a BH-601 nokia headset but i can't use it. Why did they forgot this? Have you people any idea how long it is gonna take until the next firmware update? If any! An eternity ! Damn!

I agree, it's like having a new phone. There was a heart-stopping moment during updating when Nokia Updater lost connection with the phone and told me to take the battery out and put it back again before reconnecting, but other than that it went smoothly.

In addition to what others have already said, partiuularly the improved responsiveness of the interface which I have experienced too, a few more observations from me:

- The old version of Nokia E-Mail that comes with the new firmware is dog slow, I definitely recommend updating to the latest version from Beta Labs.

- There is a new theme called "N96_special_edition" which is quite good, but there are better 3rd party themes available. It has a new blue/yellow background pattern and some new folder icons but that's about it, I think.

- Nokia Search is so much faster than before. It could still be faster, but it's gone from "make a cup of tea whilst loading" to being quite acceptable.

- My N96 now makes a "swoosh" noise when I slide it. Not sure whether I like it, but it can be turned off.

My custom version is 12.043.249.4 on Euro1, have tried several times but with no success. Any advice please.

Upgraded no problem on my Euro1

I have just tried the update and lost connection as well for some reason. When I followed the on screen instructions the update did not continue and could not detect the phone. I now have what looks like a N96 paper weight.

Any advice anyone - please!

I updated it using FOTA, it seemeed to finish the update, but when it restarted, it failed to start.

I get the NOKIA logo, then, 10-15 seconds, it restarts again.. and again.. and again.. (about 100 times so far)

dunno what to do!

one problem I have noticed, "Record Location" not working. I have turned it on and the display shows as it's on but after the picture taken it doesn't show the gps data on the image. no gps data recorded to the picture exif

Anyone else having this issue?

only bought n96 a month ago that was unlocked from 3 uk.Was buggy and froze alot with older update but latest one is a huge improvement.Am very happy so far and the ota application for updates is excellent.Thanks nokia and thanks all about symbian for great forum and advice.

Yes I have same issue with this update. Record location is on in camera settings and no data stored in image from the GPS

I fixed my camera Geotag issue by an octopus reset. This also resolved the Voicemail number not being saved as well which I also had. It all works great now

hello ,i have updated to version 20.5 but i can see the email notifications on my home screen.
i already setup my email and got into setting and set it to show my default email,but nothing.
by the way i can now see only two lines in my agenda on the stand by screen any one have this problem.

I noticed a few changes in the FW20 for N85/79 & the screenshots you guys have put up for N96's FW20.

* Share Online hasn't been updated to v4 in N96?

* Nokia Messaging was present in the FW itself or is installed automatically when you choose to set up a Nokia Messaging email account? On the N85, if you select Nokia Email Service in the Email setup wizard, it says the installer package not found. Had to install and set up manually.

* The font size on the active standby looks pretty small. It doesn't even look bold. Is it different from N85/79?

* There is no Internet Telephone active standby plugin like in N85/79? Though all the plugin does is bring up a list consisting of just Gizmo, from where you can install gizmo.

* Search has a new OVI style icon in the N96?

* Download! also has this weird new icon in the N96?

* Video Centre'e icon hasn't been changed in the 96 like in 85/79?

* That is the icon for Maps 3. Was it included in the firmware or is it the beta from betalabs installed by you guys manually.

Can somebody put up screenshots for the new theme?

It wasn't the FW update, I have two sims t-mobile & 3, when the sims are swapped the server addresses change from supl.nokia.com to something on three network.

Has the phone sped up because of it?
I am looking at buying this or the n85...

any idea which one is best?

Nokia N96 is still very slow more slow opening apps then before, part from it taking years to open up apps like web contacts ECT: its better

When I kept on plugging my Headphone, the menu "Selection enhancement" would come up. When I selected "Headphone", my Nokia N96 would keep on crashing.
Solution: Plug in the Headphone. When the menu "Selection enhancement" comes up again, select the incorrect "Line out". Unplug the Headphone. Plug in the Headphone. When the menu "Selection enhancement" comes up again, select the correct "Headphone".
