My N95 is getting old, what next?

Hi everyone,

My trusty old (and slightly battered) N95 is getting old and I am looking for a replacement phone. However, I am not quite sure of what to get. During my life with the N95 I have realised that I use my phone mostly for messaging/connectivity and GPS (navigation, geocaching, sportsTracker). I also tried to use it for multiple media purposes, but I realised it was not exactly what I needed, so I use an iPod touch for all my multimedia. The two most annoying features was a constant hiss from the amplifier in the phone when using headphones, and that there was a slight pause every five minutes when listening to audible audio books.

Since I've been using the iPod touch for my multimedia, I found I like using a touchscreen, but I most definitely prefer a full qwerty keyboard for my messaging.

So to summarise, I need a cellphone with a qwerty keyboard, adequate battery life, and a touchscreen would be nice. On top of this I do not want to blow my entire month's wage on one cellphone.

As I see it, I have the following choices:
E71: QWERTY keyboard, but cramped, and good battery life
E75: larger qwerty keyboard,fp2, but smaller battery, and more expensive than E71
N97: large qwerty, larger battery, touch screen, but more expensive, but again, a cooler device.

Given my usage pattern above, I am leaning towards the E 75. Do any of you have any weighty arguments for choosing one over the other, or is there perhaps any other imminent releases from Nokia? Any suggestions are very welcome.

Thanks,
Frank

An N97 is the natural step up from the N95. I'm going to get one of those, but am reluctant to upgrade as soon as it comes out because not all the applications that I use on my N95 will be available for the N97 on launch, so I'm going to wait a bit longer until they are.

I, like you, like the idea of touchscreen but also want something that brings proper tactile response (i.e. buttons!). I used to have a 9110i Communicator, which also had a full QWERTY keyboard in it and it was so useful. That's why I'd opt for an N97.

I agree , N97 is natural step from N95 + Qwerty .
Keyboard : E90 , with mature software , 2 screens and quite a drop
down in price already
Music : 5800 XM , an iPod with Phone . Very good musicplayer . I heard
some people dropped their iPod in favour of XM
N97 : It might be good to wait for the production Reviews . Anyway take in account , there will come some FirmwareUpdates in the future .
It looks like a nice machine though .

I agree with you that the N97 is the natural upgrade from the N95. However, I am very happy with my iPod touch as my multimedia device, and I will probably continue using this for that purpose. Another reason for this is that I am not comfortable with having my cell phone plugged into my ear the entire day (even though it is very convenient).

So, given that I am not interested in the multimedia stuff, is the N97 still compelling enough? What's the difference in the hardware specifications for the E75 and N97 in terms of the CPU performance and RAM? I'm having problems with the N95 being underpowered.

Thanks very much for that link.

It lacks the processor and memory specs for the E75, though.

Here're the missing pieces:

E75's Processor - ARM 11, 369 MHz
E75's Memory - 128MB RAM / 256 MB ROM

It seems the E75's memory is the same as the N97, but its processor is slower.

Processor shouldn't be a deal-breaker if you don't use much multimedia but the battery life on the E75 seems to be it's biggest drawback.

I agree, so is it possible to get a larger battery for the E75?

And does anyone know where the GPS antenna is located on the E75? It was a real problem for me that it was located under the keyboard on the N95 so that I have to have it open all the time.

Nokia N97 is now where nearer to N95. I switched to n97 form my nokia and believe me n97 was no way nearer to it.

Just few differences that i got it form my inital use which are just good enough to stay with your your hero ( N95 )

1) N97 crappy camera. N97 camera is terrible - the N95 has the best .
2) No video camera.
3) You can’t save webpages. Once again, you can on the N95
4) Opera Mini is great on the N95.
5) No recording of audio. You can on an N95, and email it to Posterous for instant podcast.

I think you must be confusing this with the N79?

God knows- the N79 has the same camera and video as the N95. I don't think you'll find a bigger battery but you could always buy a spare.
Seems like you have an E51 Diane. You posted asking for help with it in the SE P1 section.

Dear Friend,
I don't think presently there is anything which N95 can be sacrified for. But I have read Nokia press release that this company is planning to launch a mobile which can also be termed as mini laptop. It would have 100GB on-board memory, HD video recording, QWERTY keyboard, large screen, high speed processor and a built-in projector.
I suppose you should not waste your money on any presently available cosmetically altered phone and wait for this giant monster to hit market.
Regards
Ejaz

When 100GB or more is coming , I wouldn't mind to cover my suit with Overalls , and a special pocket for my Giant , including a hole for the projector eye : showing permanent movies on the way .
Keep life virtual alive !

What about an E71?

I know the N97 is supposed to be the duck's nuts but it is new, and won't get a mature firmware for another 6 months. Plus it's big and has moving parts.

The e71, despite the slower processor is the fasted nokia I have ever used. Menu's fly. Everything is quick and snappy and there's no lag in anything, unlike the (on paper) more powerful N95. The camera is now acceptable (since new firmware update), GPS is in there, build quality is superb, it's well supported and the keyboard is great.

E71 would definately be my choice. At least untill the N97 proves itself.

Things that really irk me about the N97 is that it uses a resistative screen, which is fine, really, but still should have been capacitive for a flagship model. The othert hing that is cause for concern is the puny cpu and no GPU. On something like the E71 or e75, i think this would be fine as the screen is smaller and navigation is via buttons. But on a touchscreen device with many more pixels and a multimedia focus...it is a worry. The jury is still out for me.

P.S I own a N95 and wish I had bought the E71 instead....
