I'm going to wait....

Is anyone worried that, like the original N95 debacle, we'll be treated to a better, faster model after about 5 months or so?

Reading about the N97 has left me pondering the fact that we'll have an allegedly 'top of the range' phone that doesn't even match it's competitors on some pretty fundamental levels.

I will be holding on to my trusty N95 8GB and my pointless 5800 until at least December....

Any thoughts?

hey i totally agree. i'm already satisfied with my 5800 browser screen resolution. so i'm jsut gonna sit back and see how this whole n97 thing plays out. at least wait till the price drops by half or it gets superceeded by something better from nokia.

I'm not quibbling with your decision, but is there anywhere in consumer electronics where this doesn't happen? 🙄 😉

I have come to exactly the same conclusion.

In fact, I had my excellent N95 version 1 for 18 months and loved it. When the N97 was announced (what seems like years ago now!) I decided that this was the only possible replacement for me so I set my heart on it. But with the constant delays and increases in likely price I succumbed to getting a 5800 in the interim.

The problem is that now I have the 5800 I can't get too excited about the N97. Yes, there are a few extras that would be great to have but I can't really justify the 4-500 it is likely to cost just on those extras. The 5800 will have most of what the N97 will offer and I can live without the 5mp camera and hard keyboard (which for me are the main upgrade items from the 5800).

So, I think that Nokia have made a bit of a boo boo with releasing the 5800 before the N97. They would have been better off getting the N97 out and then releasing the 5800 as it's baby, non-N Series, media based brother.

In all likelihood I will still get a N97 but it will probably be after the first few firmware upgrades or possibly I might even wait until the version 2 comes out (as with the N95) which could have capacitative screen. We will see. One thing is certain though... I won't be one of the first N97 buyers as I had originally intended.

I'm not going to wait. I want it now.

My n95 is a bit beaten up and I want a shiny new phone. I've wanted a shiny new phone since december when this was announced and I'm not waiting any longer.

The n97 is geektastic, with all the lovely symbian terminal clients and wifi doohickies and apache versions and the like. And as a developer I'm itching to muck about with the S60 5th API.

So it's an n95 with a big keyboard, big screen and more storage? Works for me... n95 is my fave phone so far - even with the crap battery! This seems to be a natural progression.

And it's non-apple, so yay! 😉

Given Nokia's track record:

E61 > E61i
N93 > N93i
N73 > N73ME
N80 > N80i (only a firmware update however)
N95 > N95 8GB
E71 > E71X

would you be expecting an N97i any time after the initial launch of the N97? Quite frankly.. I do..

the N73ME was only a firmware update also.

and no, i wouldn't expect an N97i for at least 6 months after the N97's release.

and if they do, what could they upgrade that would be worth it? (except from capacative touch screen)

Well, sticking with the N95 to N95 8GB upgrade we could expect the following:

More internal memory

larger display

double (or more) RAM

Better battery

small cosmetic changes to improve look, feel etc

improved UI
My N95 8GB is currently falling apart at the seams (creaking casing, volume control broken) and I want to replace it with something that won't be upgraded for a couple of years at least.

IMHO the N95 8GB has been the phone to beat since it's release - I don't want to shell out next month for the N97 only to see the "N97 but better" in December.

Yes, I would expect a major upgrade to the N97 not too long after initial launch. It is the Nokia way and to be honest, it makes good business sense. As a business it is their job to squeeze as much revenue out of their products as possible and if they can release an improved variant then I am sure they will.

I got caught by the N95 to N95 8Gb upgrade. Being one of the earlier users I missed out on the *GB version. I was already in a contract and couldn't afford to by a sim-free upgrade. I am not going to let that happen with the N97. I have 5800 and I am going to try to make that last until the upgraded vriant of the N97 is launched... whatever and whenever that is! If my 5800 expires before then well I may bite the bullet and gt an original N97 but I will try to avoid getting one full price if at all possible.

Nokia usually announces the "i" improvements about 6-9 months into the product and you'll find that all mobile phone manufacturers recognise a model life to be only 24 months before they are deemed End of Life. The "i" improved model is a mid-life face lift usually if anything..

Not really sure how much of an improvement Nokia will make on an "i" model of the N97 though - because Nokia also has a history that if they improve something overly TOO much, then they will introduce it as another model (eg. N85 > N86)

Definitely interesting. But if everyone just keeps waiting for the ultimate phone, then you might as well not buy at all since theres always going to be something better around the corner.
