Screen Guard for 5800... worthwhile?

9 replies · 5,282 views · Started 12 May 2009

Hi all,

Sorry if this has already been discussed but I have always bought those adhesive film screen guards for my previous handsets, to protect the glass from scratches.

Is it...

(a) worth putting one on the 5800?
(b) will it reduce the sensitivity of the touch screen (or even damage it)?

Your views are most welcome!

Yeah, I've got one on mine and it works fine. I just got an ordinary one, so it should be alright. 😊 The stylus it comes with seemed to scratch my screen protector a lot, so i'd be worried if you didn't have one

thanks m8, I have ordered one off fleaBay

I thought that the screen would scratch a lot when I first got my 5800 and so I immediate bought a screen guard. I got the Proporta one that can be remove and reapplied.

After using it for a while I found that the screen guard made the screen less easy to read when in daylight. It made the screen look a bit hazy or fuzzy even when clean. I had applied it correctly and the screen underneath was spotless.

I have now removed the guard and I can see the screen a lot better now. It has been a couple of months of regular daily use and the screen has no scratches or marks. It is actually quite tough and if you use your finger or the supplied pointer I would be surprised if it scratched much if at all.

Did you see the report on AAS that showed Rafe (I think it was Rafe?) using a pointed knife on the screen! Not recommended for sure but it proved a point (pardon the pun!! :rolleyes😊

So, does the 5800 need a protector? Depends on your usage I suppose but for me so far the answer is no.

I received my 4x screen guards for 0.99, and what a waste of money. All 4 resulted in bubbles, creases or marks once applied (and I have applied quite a few screen guards in my time).

On a good note, the screen guards, once removed, left the Nokia touch pad extermely clean. I think I will risk not applying a screen guard to the 5800.

Thanks to everyone for their comments. 😉

I bought a Martin Fields screen protector together with the phone, and boy was I happy to never have used the stylus without protector: the stylus that came with the phone had a hard particle at the tip and scratched the protector at his first use! The stylus is really crap, it should have a rubber tip, not a hard plastic tip.
The protector was easy to apply, no bubbles, has no glue, is removable, and even has parts to protects the camera lenses.
It wasn't cheap, but I am really happy with it and I don't feel the screen sensibility decreased noticeably.
On my previous phone (not touchscreen) I had a Vikuiti screen protector and was very satisfied with the optical quality.

i bought a very cheap one, maybe $0.90 and it's quite good actually. Scrolling is a bit bad but still, the screen seem to be holding on nice and no scratches. Recommend some kind of protection.

For what it is worth I almost never used screen protectors with my Palms and don't with my 5800. I have no problems with the stylus. The screen itself seems to be quite scratch resistant and, I suppose, with all this time of using a stylus with a naked TX 😮😉 that I've learned how to get what I want with a little gentle prodding.

To my mind, if the beautiful screen is part of why I bought the device, why do I want to muck it up with a layer of plastic.

But that's just me. 😊

I too feel the same about the great looking screen and I am quite pleased that I no longer use the screen protector. It looks so much better without the protector.

To be totally honest, it really doesn't need one anyway. I haven't found anything scratches it including the supplied stylus. Still good as new in spite of daily use.

I bought the expensive one from Proporta. I liked it. It went on very easily and came off easily too for cleaning and reapplication. I still have it but just don't use it. If I need one in future for another phone I would still pay the extra.

After several weeks of use, I am in agreement... the soft touch-sensitive screen on the 5800 does not seem so vulnerable to scratches as the hard plastic/glass of previous Nokia's.
I am no longer planning to buy a protective film.

Thanks to all who replied to my query. 😉
