Haver I got a fake N95 8GB?! Or just one with a f***ed firmware?

Hi you...

Yesterday I got a Nokia N95 8GB as a gift and I had nothing but trouble with it. No joy form such a nice piece of kit.

There are several issues I am having (I'll list them in the order I stumbled across them)

1. I cannot set image size higher than 640x480, when the device is advertised to be able to do 2592 x 1944. Image capture tools are really limited, as opposed to what I see in reviews.
1. a. The camera lens (the little hole) is smaller than I see in screen shots and it's a bit of centre, which is leading me to believe it may have been omgh4ckd, or changed with a lesser quailty camera.
2. I take a single picture and upon taking a second one, (of the above size) I get a memory full message.
3. Navigating to memory status to see WTF is going on is leaving me baffled. It says something like: TOTAL: 8G - 55K / FREE 48K (this is after a code hard reset)
4. At least an entire "chapter" is missing from the menu and that is TOOLS (which would have Connectivity etc)
5. The icons in the menu look rough, pixelated, when, judging from screenshots they should be nice with smooth round edges.
6. The phone isn't recognized neither by PCSuite, nor by Nokia Software Updater, and when connected via USB cable I don't have PCSuite available as a connection type. All I get is mass storage, COM Port, and Picture Bridge.
7. However I connect the phone to my computer (I tried, 3 different ones running XP, Vista and Win7) I never see the 8GB mass storage device. (just a 55kb drive)
8. ????
9. Craziness ensues, like you would imagine.

btw: *#0000# give me this: V 12.0.013 19-06-2007 Nokia N95 (90.01) (Notice it only says it's an N95 and not an N95 8GB)

Phew I think that's all. I'm sorry for the wall of text, but I think you need to know as much as you can to form an opinion and offer advice.

Could you post up a photo of the menu screen please?

When entering *#0000# You should see the firmware on the first line, then a date, then RM number, then finally Nokia Copyrighted info.

There are an increasing number of fakes around (mainly from China it seems).

Another vway of ascertaining if it's genuine is to visit the Nokia update site here:-

.

Sounds like you have been given one of those cheap far-east clones that fleaBay sells. (Neither COM Port or Picture Bridge are standard Nokia connection types).
Sorry if that's not what you wanted to hear.
