Hi,
I am having trouble getting my albums to show their track listing in the correct order. Rather than going by track number, they are ordering by alphabetical order.
I have used "Mp3tag" and made sure the tracks have track numbers (tried formatting to both "01, 02 etc.." and "1,2,3 etc..."😉 and checked that they are perfectly accurate in Windows Media Center. They are !
In the "1,2,3 etc.." format, the N85 does list the first 9 tracks accurately for some reason.
Why don't they appear properly on my phone? I think they were correct before the latest FW upgrade - could this have caused it?
Is there an application i can use to format the ID Tags in such a way that the N85 reads them accurately? I have used the Nokia Music Software and that gives exactly the same result.
Any help would be great...
thanks in advance.
Not sure if this will help but...
I'm presuming when you first copied the music files to your memory card and opened music player, you noticed the anomaly. So you then got mp3tag on the case to sort them out.
Did you check the file numbering before using mp3tag or making any further changes? Did you notice a problem then?
If so, when you edit the file tags, I don't know whether you need to "refresh library" again to take into account the changes rather than just expecting the N85 to spot the amendments.
Remember, it's the "track number" field which dictates the order of the tracks not the contents of the "track title" field.
Just take care with Media Player on the PC. It's very easy to sort the tracks into a variety of orders if you click somewhere accidentally so what may look right might not be the actual incremental track order as per the "track number" field.
Clear as mud?

Thx for the reply...
I have made sure all the "track number" fields are perfect, hence noticing that the N85 likes the "1,2,3 etc" numbering, but not the "01,02,03 etc...".
The first format orders tracks 1-9 correctly, but the rest in alphabetical order. The second format places every track in alphabetical order.
I think I need clarification on the best format for the "track number" field, or I will never be able to have any albums with more than 10 tracks in the correct order on my N85.
Or, if this isn't the problem, guidance as to which application I should use to control my ID3 tags so that they will work on Windows Media Centre and Nokia N85.
Any clarification would be of great help.
Like you probably, I have an extensive music library stored on a Windows Media Center PC (running Windows XP).
When I download stuff, sites such as Napster and 7Digital tend to already have all the tags correctly done for you. However, when there's a 2 disc album for example, I'd rather have that show up as one album rather than 2 within Media Player/Media Center. So I manually renumber all the track numbers to 31, 32, 33, etc so that they follow on after the first disc. I've done this directly within Media Player itself. If you don't do this, even on your N85, you'll find 2 track 1s, 2 track 2s, etc unless you name each disc slightly differently.
A lot of time, I use MusicBrainz Picard to name all my tracks properly and this also takes care of tags as well. But it shouldn't be essential to get things to appear in order.
Try opening an album in Media Player and going to "album" tab followed by "now playing" at the bottom and look at the track number. You may need to right click the column headings to display the "track" field in the first place. See how they are numbered on there.

I am happy with the way my music is appearing on my PC - it is perfect (Windows Vista Ultimate - the Media Centre in that is the one I use)
However, as I said, the 1,2,3,etc... track number format works on both Media Centre & on the N85 until I get to track number 10, where it goes wrong only on the phone.
If anyone can shed any/some light onto this I would be far less stressed and very grateful.
I still can't remember if the latest FW update caused this or not. If someone could verify that they have an album with more than 10 tracks that appears in the correct order in Music Player on the phone that would confirm that something is wrong at my end and not generically with the phone.
Please help !
Hiya,
I'm having the exact same problems with my N85 - track order goes alphabetical after the 9th track. Very very annoying. The tracks seem to lose their true track number once they have been copied to the phone - even though they are in the right order on my computer. This problem happens in all the different USB modes with which you can connect the N85.
Lets hope they sort this out soon, because it is really annoying me.

Maybe you can tell us the format of your Track Number field in the ID3 tags?
Perhaps you could also tell us which software you use to rip/organize your MP3s too?
I'm sure we'll get to the bottom of this soon.
To confirm, my FW = v20.175
I guess no-one has a solution for this.
Maybe they'll fix it with the next FW update.
If anyone else has any more ideas, please share them here.
Cheers.
Well,
I have found a way to fix it but it's a bit laborious...
Goto windows search and look for *.mp3 in the music folder on your memory card
Drag all your mp3s into mp3tag (available here http://www.mp3tag.de/en/)
Then perform the action "Format Value"
Select TITLE as the field
Set the format string to $num(%track%,2) %title%
Press OK (this will prefix the track name on all your mp3s with the track number)
So, "Bohemian Rhapsody" becomes "01 Bohemian Rhapsody" etc
Press save on mp3tag to write the new tags to the files
Then you'll need to refresh the music library in the phone
(not sure if you need to force this by deleting the music library cache...?)
Phew... 😊
Hi,
This will work, but will rename all the Titles.
I thought the phone ordered by Track Number though. Can anyone confirm this for me?
I should say again that the problem is only there when albums have more than 9 tracks.
Any other fixes would be VERY welcome 😊
Well, after track 9, the phone seems to sort the songs alphabetically by title (!)
So, changing the titles like this keeps them in the correct order...
I keep my music as FLAC format on my PC so copying to my phone is always a multi-stage process... I never intend to copy the files back (in this case 'damaged'😉
I am dumbfounded as to how they can introduce such a large bug when they seem to attempt to improve the music player so little between firmwares (if at all)... :frown:
So far, the only way to keep track order is to rename the titles.
Is this really a bug or are we doing something wrong here?
OK
Even with Firmware upgrade, the track listing in Music Player will still only show the first 9 tracks in the correct order - the rest will go in alphabetical order.
Does anyone know a way around this yet?
Does anyone know who at Nokia I should report it to?
Cheers.
This is getting annoying now.
Even the latest firmware update has not addressed this problem.
Does anyone know who I should contact at Nokia to alert them of the issue please? Maybe they don't know !
Thanks.
You can log bug/faults via Nokia's web site.
Let us know if you get any joy (I didn't on the last firmware issues I logged with them...)
I have now COMPLETELY reset my N85 (Hard 3-key reset) and immediately tranferred 1 CD.
Same track order problem.
Nokia need help I reckon.
