want to update my firmware but t mobile very kindly won't provide the settings, to do a ota firware update can anyone help

Use Nokia Software Updater (NSU) on a Windows PC: http://www.nokia.com/softwareupdate

Or take the phone to your nearest Nokia authorized service/repair center.

Have you tried using the "SW Checker" app (Probably in the tools/utilities menu? I'm not sure how this differs from the "device manager" app you access via *#0000# but it definitely appears to be a different application for basically doing the same thing.
