Difference between American & Global Version?

Hi all,
Does anyone know ALL the differences between the N97 sold in North America and the global version for most of the other countries?

From what I have seen:
America does NOT have an FM transmitter or Nokia Music etc, global does (any idea why?)

America does NOT have HSDPA and GPRS, global has HSDPA and GPRS.

I know the american version will work in Dubai United Arab Emirates, but I guess GPRS etc won't. Question is, is this a hardware or software based issue? If software I can just try and flash it with a version of global software, correct?

Any help on other differences and other tips would be great. I ordered the phone on Amazon, and just noticed these differences, which may make me have to cancel the order.

Thanks!

i dont think one thing you posted was correct. the american n97 DOES have FM transmitter. yes nokia music has not launched in USA yet. but the n97 certainly DOES have HSDPA for USA and YES it has GPRS. lol

the american n97 is IDENTICAL to the UK version, except it has 850/1900 3G. while the UK version has 900/1900/2100 3g. thats the ONLY difference.

i would keep your amazon order. i'm thinking of placing an order with amazon as well. remember, the USA nd UK versions of the n97 are IDENTICAL in every single thing except for the frequencies. USA n97 will work on ATT 3g (not tmobile, sorry. there are no unlocked phones that work with tmobile 3g yet). but you CANNOT flash a USA version to the global version. it seems odd, but with the past models, even though the ONLY difference between the 2 versions was the frequencies, we were not able to flash USA versions to the global versions without bricking the phone. n97 will probably be the same.

Thanks for the response Roger.
I also thought everything was the same except for the 3G frequencies. But having just read the technical specs posted at http://scooopy.net/blog/nokia-n97-tech-spec/ it says:

Operating Frequency

* (RM-505, Global) WCDMA 900/1900/2100, Quad band GSM 850/900/1800/1900, HSDPA, GPRS, A-GPS, WLAN
* (RM-506, PR China) E-GSM 850/900/1800/1900, A-GPS
* (RM-507, Americas) WCDMA 850/1900/2100, Quad band GSM 850/900/1800/1900, A-GPS, WLAN

As you can see, there is a difference between the American and Global versions.
About the FM transmitter - the specs on the nokiausa.com page dont mention it, but its mentioned on other european sites and www.nokia.ae

I'd be so happy if I'm wrong! 😊

There is a difference.

The American one is fatter, has less memory, and is only available in black

Nah just messing. I agree, it shouldn't be any different to others across the globe, except it will work on different 3G bands.

[EDIT] Also, just because the built in radio isn't mentioned in the specs doesn't mean it won't be included. Take the UK's N97 stylus fiasco... no mention of it on Nokia's online UK shop, but AAS proved it comes in the box anyway.

It looks like just some minor typo, i wouldnt worry too much about it. the american version for sure has everything the global version has, just with USA frequencies rather than UK. i wouldnt put too much thought into the link you found, its just a mess up😃 FM transmitter will be there too no worries!
