I have had this device for 2/3 months now and despite my initial excitement and Enthusiasm I now find it extremely disappointing. I have always liked Nokias, simply because they work! However I find Nokia kind of stuck in the dark ages with the OS and hardware, rather like MS! 5800 was meant to be a revolutionary device, the way forward. I was excited by this, but find it slow, with a limited OS, and the lack of application is a joke! Couple years ago Nokia phones were leader, however now they are stock in time and their devices lack innovation and intuitivity. As a Music phone the MP3 player is a joke, you can not even fast/fwd to a position on the music as it is so cumbersome.
To top it all, the build quality is 3rd class, it feels cheap, and it is cheap. And yes, there are people who say it is a cheap entry level touch screen and what do you expect. However I expect something that is robust and forward pointing. Something that works. My devise broke after 2 months, sent to CFW for repair, they sent to Nokia and they are keeping it for up to 28 days. Very disappointing all round and wished I dished out the extra 100 for an Iphone.
The term Iphone killer is banted around with the 5800, but face the fact, This is no Iphone killer, in no way what so ever.
Sorry you have had such a bad experience. I have had the 5800 for 2-3 months now and have a quite different reaction. Excellent build quality, very durable, snappy interface. Yes, developers have been a little slow at catching up with apps, but that' changing. Nonetheless, I have been able to get pretty much everything I want.
Maybe my sense of things is because this is my first Nokia, but I love it. It's perfect for me.

Sorry you're not impressed and that yours has broken down.
My experience (after 1 month) is the exact opposite - I think the 5800XM is the BEST handset Nokia have ever released.
Lack of apps? I suggest you look further than what's available on the built-in Download and OVI functions. There's 1000s of quality apps out there from 3rd party websites.
If you are going to get an iPhone, I suggest you wait 2 weeks as the new iPhone 'S' almost matches the 5800 for specs, although I think the 5800 still has the higher resolution screen.
I believe the 5800XM IS an iPhone killer, and it's almost half the cost of an iPhone as well. 😉

when i read statements like this, i immediately disregard the rest of your post as lack of credibility. you realize you can use your finger and drag to the position FF and RW. and if you need more detail, you use your fingernail or the stylus that is attached to your phone. its not that hard, i listen to music every day on my 5800 and FF and RW all the time.

Ok, try a simple test. Load a MP3 say 4 to 5 mins long. Than try dragging (Using Ur quoted methods) to say 02:33. Then try going back 10 seconds. Id be interested to know if U can get within 3 seconds of the target without repeated attempts.
UPDATE : on the Nokia repair. They claim the damage is due to water or a drop, thus not warrenty cover! Both are incorrect. My phone was never near water or rain, and never was dropped. Amazing lie.

Actually, that works pretty well. I can quickly get within 5 sec and a simple slight rocking of my finger can get me +/- 2 secs. I'm not sure the use case for this function (I mean that honestly, not as a dismissive statement-- I really don't know when I would ever need that kind of precision), but it will do it.

:con? myself. I can't imagine why you would need to be so precise also. Unless the op is trying to learn musical notes?
I just used the stylus to go back and forward and it was rather easy to be honest. I ended up without really trying to get 1 second out of the time I wanted, which would do for me.
well i think only those people get frustrated with 5800 who try to relate its experiance with non touch phones like n series. even i sometimes miss the joystick but i love 5800.
I have no problems with the phone at all, still love it. Can't see a reason to change from it in the forseeable future, well, unless I get the 450 necessary for an N97!
I use it as my main MP3 player everyday, and have had no problems using the touch seeking. Try using the stylus, although I don't have to. Maybe there's something wrong with your fingers?
I love mine even more since I discovered the BBC iPlayer app.
I think it's a great phone, though like Dushy4 I wouldn't mind having a joystick/dpad for games or other apps.
i think because of the brand.. if u really like iphone.. go ahead..
for me.. Nokia, most friendly user and cheap better than i phone.. :icon4:
I can fast forward a song just using my fingertip and its very very accurate. All you do is press and hold, then drag to your desired location. You can move the bar to pretty much the exact time you desire. No problems here.

我们中国人对5800也是相当的失望和无奈,哈哈哈哈哈

Noboby wants a handset without GPS or 3G!
It's out now, the 5530, has anyone got one yet? If you have can you give a mini review? :icon14:

Sorry to be unpleasant to you - but if you post one more 5530 releated thread in the 5800 forum I will complain to Rafe about you! 😡
well it kinda relates because we are all hoping that nokia updates our 5800 with kinetic scrolling features that the 5530 has.😃

Do you always apologise before being unpleasant?

Only to people who have been asked several times to stop, but then continue to post in wrong area of the forum.

Perhaps you and moonshot could ask Rafe to setup a 5530 forum area, then the 5800XM owners would not have to read about the 5530?

He isn't posting in wrong forum. This forum is for the "Nokia Numbered S60 5.0". The 5800 is one phone that fits under that description but the 5530 is another.

I think Rafe would make life easier if the 5530 had its own forum.
The 5530 has no GPs and no 3G so it's not even similar to the 5800XM
I've only had it for a couple of weeks and now that I'm over the initial excitement of it, I'm feeling the exact same things you seem to be about the phone. So much so, I'm thinking of getting a BB Curve 8900 or iPhone 3G and selling this again, but I'm going to give it about a week for an announcement confirming kinetic scrolling to come out. If not, away the 5800 may go...
