i think you should be able to pay for the service even if it didnt come with your phone...it would open up the market so much!!!!i know i would pay for it.would you?

As the service is more about selling/promoting a device, and not the service itself, I don't expect that to happen.
Without the device, most of the money goes to the record labels and what's left is probably not enough to run/maintain the service, so even if lots of users would probably like it, I suspect it wouldn't be very profitable (no money from a new device, and no money from the service). Companies that don't earn money won't stay around for very long (unless there's an investor willing to donate the money to keep it afloat without a business case).
apples app store isnt profitable..i think it would be good for nokias sales.
