Inconsistent use of 'destinations' is really annoying

One thing that is really starting to bug me about the N97 is the inconsistent use of connection groups, a.k.a 'destinations'.

Some apps support the new groups, whereas others - including N97 aware software like the latest version of Nokia Messaging, downloaded via the built-in software updater or the home screen widgets - use the old model or selecting a single connection (either one WiFi access point, or a phone network connection).

This means that the widgets will stop working if you have then set to use WiFi at home and then leave the range of your network. They don't automatically pick up another connection (i.e. your 3G or GPRS connection) if WiFi is not available.

I can just about live with this for the widgets, but now to find Nokia Messenging only lets me pick from the list of individual access points is a little annoying.

This is their 'flagship' messenging client, on their 'flagship' N-series device and it doesn't support one of the new features at all...

I disagree with you here, Nokia Messaging uses a constant connection, which is why it only wants to ever use the same connection. If Nokia Messaging had to keep scanning network selections, it would kill your battery in a few hours, as it would be constantly be scanning wifi networks. And if it did this, you would only complain because your battery died quickly.
Some applications could do with a little help, like Opera Mini, but Nokia Messaging isn't one of them.

my problem is that bbc iplayer wont use my wifi and there is no option the software to designate which ap to use

I can see where you are coming from, but they should allow the users to choose instead of an Apple-esque, we know what's best for you policy.

I frequently work on sites that are either underground, or inside large buildings where there is good WiFi coverage, but no mobile network. When I go outside, I want to use the mobile network when it's available.

Nokia have made that choice for me, so now I have no mail (via Nokia Messaging) for large parts of the day.

I have an issue now wherein the homescreen widgets only want to connect through my home Wifi and not through anything else, despite changing the priorities, removing/readding the widgets on the homescreen, and restarting the phone.

How can I change the default connection for homescreen widgets?

UPDATE: This problem eventually went away for me, and it started to ask what connection I'd like to use when it loses it's connection. This was ideal...

...sadly because of syncing problems and general errors popping up when trying to view photos and some program settings I was forced to do a soft reset last night. Now I'm having the same problem again. While I was at work, it was beeping every 10-20 seconds complaining that it wasn't able to find my home wifi connection.

How on earth do I set homescreen widgets to let me choose my connection when it loses it?

You can't! I just got rid of widgets in the end and now load the app as I need it. When I do this it now always chooses WIFI over 3g when available through my destination priorities.

The only exception is either my RSS feeds of Mail send and receive (not sure which is doing it) that connects periodically to 3G even in a WIFI area.

I agree that the inconsistent misuse of destinations is shoddy but I don't have the problem you mention above.

When I leave my house and the WiFi drops out I find that the phone picks up the network connection automatically a few seconds later. Sadly, it doesn't switch back again when I get home.

My problems were way back in June with the v10 firmware. Since then I just removed any widget that needs network access. The only 'updating' widget I have on my home page is mail.

we all have this problem. i get round it this way

when you are at home (or in the range of the wifi you want) go to homepage and change profile to offline. then switch back to general (or whichever you want to use) and the phone will use wifi for everything, including Iplayer

hope it works for you :icon14:

Hi All

I installed SmartConnect. When installing it says not for this version of software, but it seems to work ok. It comes up as uncategorised in destinations, but allows me to use wifi when in house and Contract Internet when on the move to connect.

Hope this has been of help

Gary

Hmm, I've been fiddling with my web settings and changed it's connection to "Internet" rather than ask each time. I then closed facebook, reopened it, and then connected it to my home wifi. After a few minutes, I disabled my router. Not long after, it asked which connection to use, the default being my GPRS. Fingers crossed I've solved it now. 😃

I set the options for the default web browser to "Ask when needed" (Options->Settings->General->Ask when needed) and now my Home-screen widget asks me where to connect to when I walk out the front door and walk up to the corner shop for milk.

I hear it meep about 2 yards up from the front door and when I return home, of course, it doesn't auto-connect back to the Wifi, but when I next try and use the applet, it asks me also where I should connect to.

Neil
