Updating fireware on locked phone
You have to debrand your phone, follow this guide here

(I had the same problem, now I'm up-to-date on the firmware. Makes a big difference to the operation of the phone)

Please be aware de-branding INVALIDATES the Nokia Warranty.
Nokia engineers can tell de-branding was done so beware!
I have vista and cannt get this to work, I install the Jaf 1.98 ok but once i try to run Pkey 4 nothing happens
Scratch that, got it working

Dear Sionboy,
Can you tell me if this method can remove the protection of network operator or no?
I mean for example: if i bought the 5800 with contract from operator X, if i changed the code to another code for free sim would it work and i can use any other sim card from another operator or no.
And if no, how to do it?
Best Regards

This question is asked frequently...
De-branding FIRMWARE will not remove any network SIM-LOCKING from the handset. The 2 functions are completelty different.
To 'unlock' a handset for use with any network SIM...
1. Obtain an unlock code from the network provider who the handset is currently locked to. Some network providers offer the unlock code for free, others charge up to 20 UKP.
or
2. Take the phone to a phone unlocking shop. They will attach your phone to special hardware (JAF box etc) to hack in and break the code. Unlock-shops typically charge from 5 to 20.
My own advice is to be wary of using unlocking shops. My local shop bricked my N82 during unlocking and (fortunately for me) they bought me a replacement handset at their own cost. Other retailers might just hand the phone back broken and tell you to send it to Nokia for repair. If Nokia engineers could then detect the handset was hacked using a JAF box etc, your warranty would be invalidated.
Dear Dez_Borders
