Recently my old Motorola E2 died. The replacement is a 5800 thats due here Monday.
I see a number of the PC based tools for updating the 5800 as well as downloading maps and so forth that are all intended for Windows of some flavor. Problem is that I have run linux (SUSe 10.3) on my laptop and desktops for some time.
Any one here know anything about running any of the Nokia tools under something like Crossover or Wine or (less desirably because of HD space) VirtualBox?
The Motorola E2 was Linux based. Im looking forward to learning symbian but between then and now I ve got to be able to run basic tools for the 5800.
Any suggestions anyone might have would be deeply appreciated.

Hello there fellow Linux-user!
I faced the same problems when I got my 5800.
I have not tested the "management" apps from Nokia in Wine or CrossOver, but I use VirtualBox to run a virtualized Windows machine.
In VB I have found that the most things works perfectly, the whole PC-Suite seems to work, backup, callendar, sms etc...
The only thing is: Nokia Software Updater(NSU) works to the point that it can scan the phone for FW version, and tell if there is an update or not. However doing the actual flash via NSU on a VirtualBox VM didnt work. Tried several times(no injury to the phone luckily😊) so for that I used a "real" Windows PC.
Seems to be related to USB, and how the phone represents itself during the flash, it gets into some different mode than regular USB operation...
Wine might work tho, havent tried. If you decied to give VirtaulBox a try, please use the "oficcial" version from Sun, the OSE(OpenSource Edition) does not have USB support...
One more thing, the 5800 has several modes of operation when connected with USB. The above is said about the mode called "PC Suite". An other mode is "File transfer", wich makes the 5800 an USB-connecteed harddrive and shows up like removable storage in Linux, so for simple file-transfers, no Windows is needed😊
Good Luck with your new phone!
Hi
Many thanks for the information..... Phone is supposed to be here tomorrow. Im going to try either WINE or Crossover first. I ve considered installing VirtualBox on the laptop but it seems a shame to take up that much disk space for an XP install just to admin the phone.......
I had hoped to get the phone today but <sigh>. Also understood about loading files...if the phone appears as a drive like the E2 did ( depending on the mode set on the phone) then it souuld be no problem to just drag and drop mp3 s &c across to the memory on the phone.
More tomorrow and thanks very much.....what distro are you using-- here is 11.1 on the desktop and 10.3 on the laptop

Which version of Windows is running in your VM? W7RC is not compatible with NSU and it does exactly what you describe above - scan buf fail to update.
Also, does the VM or the host OS have a firewall installed? If so, disabled all firewalls when running NSU, particularly if Vista is involved.
Hi!
Im using both XP and 7-RC in VB(student MSDN access, so no piratecopies😊)
using XP for NSU and PC-Suite...

All i can think of is your firewall then if NSU doesnt work with XP.
My laptop is using W7-RC, so I recently performed a successful firmware upgrade using ax XP VM (VMware workstation 6).

I would beleive that VMware would work, why the flash doesnt work in VB I would guess has to do with how VB handles USB.
