Does anyone else have this cos im starting to get worried its my phone thats faulty, if i just go on normal youtube site and watch a video its almost unwatchable due to poor quality its very pixelated, the sound skips and sometimes theres wierd negative colours appearing, its not so bad when you actually download a video from iplayer althought the quality still isn't brilliant its still a little pixelated compared to watching it on the computer. Does anyone know what i can do are there some settings for adjusting the resolution or something i can do to resolve the bad picture while watching these videos?
n97 pixelated youtube videos and iplayer videos
heeeelp haha
Well, if your phone's faulty, then so is mine. I have the same problem, tried out the You TUbe app, and the first few video's I watched were very poor quality, and I thought it was just my connection that was playing up.
Anyone else have this problem? POssible fix?
However, it IS great to watch dvd video's. Have got a copy of Quatam of Solace that I compressed on my Mac, and played that from the memory card, looked fantastic I have to say. No problem with codecs or anything like that, just played straight away.
Looks like YouTube are serving up files for a more standard mobile phone, and not one with a nice big screen like the N97. It isn't an N97 specific widget is it? Just the current mobile site that you can get on any N-Series or anything else that supports playing the YT mobile videos.
Hopefully when (if?) they release an N97 (5800/S60 5th Edition) client, it'll allow for proper video viewing with decent resolutions and an efficient format that suits the phone. No doubt that'll also see an N97i or N97x model launched though...

I compared videos from my iphone and the n97. I have an app on my iphone called mxtube that allows me to download videos straight from youtube onto my iphone either a "low quality" or a "high quality" version.
Both quality versions were better than mobile youtube or real youtube on the n97; the low quality was close but the high quality wasn't even a contest.
To be fair, the YouTube app isn't actually an app. It just takes you to the YouTube mobile site, which is designed to work with a wide variety of phones, so the quality will be poor of course. I'm waiting for a native S60 app for it like they released for the N95 and other devices. The quality was so much better.

So they have a native app for the N95 but didn't have one installed on the N97?! Wow, just wow? Sad...it really does seem like this was "rushed to market."

This isn't Nokia's fault. It's down to the folks at Google to make it, just like Nokia can't be held responsible for the lack of a full QuickOffice program.
Getting back on track though, I've however had no problems with the quality of the iPlayer. Sure its a little bit blockier but that'll be down to the stream being stretched to fit the N97's larger screen. I'm sure 5800 users will report the same thing.
So far I'm way disappointed in the N97's video performance compared to my Nokia 9300 and N800.
1. The YouTube widget didn't even work for me...timing out without playing.
2. The built-in video players (RealPlayer and the other default one) are pretty primitive control-wise. The experience is only made worse by the low-quality video that came on the device. My N800 came with a high-quality video to demo with. If you're going to watch a DVD-length movie on this device the player should remember where you left off and resume.
3. Tonight I tried Lonely Cat Games "SmartMovie" which I dearly loved for my Nokia 9300. It made really good quality movies on the 9300. On the N97, the two settings you can choose are 320x180 and 320x240. Playback at the default bitrates is not sync'ed with the sound and when setting for full-screen playback there are large pixelated artifacts.
4. One positive point...videos that I filmed with the N97 played back fairly well on both the default and the RealPlayer players.
