Screen unlocking prob - possible solution?

4 replies · 3,416 views · Started 23 June 2009

Just started to have the problem that some have reported with screen unlocking... every now and again it would lock automatically and the first pull of the screen lock slider would do nothing, then a second pull would bring it back to life.

In my case I think the problem is that I set the display light time-out to 45 seconds and the auto-lock to 60 seconds... so there was a period where the LCD was blank, but it wasn't 'locked'. The first time I pulled the slider I was effectively locking the phone properly and the second pull unlocked it.

Have now set both settings to be 45 seconds and it seems to have sorted things...

Don't think this is a solution...

My N97 NAM has the problem and my screen blanking is set for 60 seconds and my autolock is set for 1 minute.

Ok, I can now reproduce the keyguard problem.

On my UK N97, I have set the accelerometer to rotate the screen.

If I rotate the phone to landscape mode. and then leave it to auto-lock, the first pull of the key lock always fails to unlock the phone - the green and red call/end keys light up but a second pull is required to unlock.

If I lock it manually in landscape mode, it's fine.

If I leave it to auto lock and then open the keyboard, it's fine.

If I switch to portrait and leave it to auto lock, it's fine.

I wonder if this is why the accelerometer was not enabled for orientation switching by default :con?

I occasionally get this problem, and don't have the accelerometer enabled. So I think that can be ruled out.

It seems like flicking the "unlock" switch sometimes makes the phone think it's already unlocked and it wants to be locked, which of course isn't what you're trying to do so the screen stays dark.

Sometimes I can make the whole screen light up blue (which is the theme I'm using) and then it'll bring up the keyguard message - in landscape format as opposed to the usual portrait), and then sometimes brings the camera mode up, but on the main camera even when the cover is shut on the back and hasn't been slid down. I wonder if this is possibly related to pressing the power button (without knowing it) a couple of times, as that also seems to take the screen out of "locked" mode, but doesn't bring up the usual power button menu to change the profiles. Weirdly if I make it "unlock" via that double press of the power button and then put the phone down, it makes the camera activate...... the shutter is firmly shut though and doesn't move if I actually try to move it (unless I properly slide it) so it's not as if it's lose or has been knocked slightly.

Quite often pressing something (the raised menu button is a good example, as it's proud of the screen and likely to get pressed against when the phone is locked) you can't see the message on screen about using the keygaurds - it's there, but the screen hasn't lit. Press it a couple of times and it lights up.

Screen staying dark/notifications:
Also, whilst on this subject of the screen staying dark... when a text message comes in and the screen is locked (eg: dark), does anyone get any notification appear on screen? It's there when you unlock, but nothing shows - not even for 10 seconds or so - showing you that you've had a message. I usually have my phone in silent but with the vibrate alert on, but have missed so many messages within the last week because the screen hasn't lit up.

hey simuk, I've only just got my N97 (i'm writing this post on it!). I've only noticed the keylock issue a couple of times myself, but would definitely welcome a fix of some sort.

In relation to your other issue about message notification - my last phone was an n95 8gb, so i'm used to having a dimmed screensaver that displayed the time and new message/missed call notification. As of yet i haven't been able to find an option to enable this on my n97, but you can turn on Notification light, this makes the light behind the menu button breathe when you get a text, missed call or email. You can turn this on in the menu by going to Phone> Notification lights> Notification light.

I turned standby br. Light off as it seemed to mask when I got a new notification.

Hope that helps. If anyone finds a way to get a similar screensaver to the n95 up on the n97 let me know.

Cheers,

Mike.
