Hi
I'm hoping to, on occassion be able to travel without having to carry the netbook around. The N97 seems quite good for that. I've installed Profimail on my machine which means I have mail. I've just installed Fring too, so I have a chat line.
Now, I have hunted out copies of Putty. There is one link that claims to be Putty for Series 5 but I don't recognise the source (nervous r us) so I've not downloaded it and when I tried to install Putty for S3 from links found hearabouts it told me that the software was not compatible with my phone, so I didn't try and proceed.
I would be interested to know if there is a version of Putty that will work nicely on the N95 and where I can obtain it. I am, of course, keen to verify the source as kocher.
Many thanks.
Regards
Neil

Did you want it for an N95 or N97? Anyway, I found this with a quick google search:
http://s2putty.sourceforge.net/
Never having using Putty I couldnt say if this is any good, but it seems to be fairly widely distributed and available from reputable sites.
Good luck with it.
My apologies, I made one typo. I wanted it for the N97 - I will see if that link will install on the phone.

Neil
I had this horrible feeling.
That link led me through the same connections to the .sis I had alread tried and which claimed it was not compatible.
So, still searching for a version of Putty for the N97 from a kocher source.

Thanks for that - works great on my N97.
Did you get a message telling you it was incompatible and continue anyway? You can guess the reason I asked is that I don't want to brick my phone.

I don't think so... if I did I went ahead anyway. The version you want for the N97 is on here:
http://bd.kicks-ass.net/koodaus/putty/
It's listed as "putty.touch_UI_v0.7.2.sisx" and is touch optimised.
Just connected to two hosts and it seems to be working fine.
Hi
Should have posted this a while back - but yes I installed that and its working fine.
I've even written a small review at http://www.yaffles-corner.co.uk/serendipity/index.php?/archives/78-PuTTY-on-the-N97.html

Hope you don't mind, but I've linked your review from the Putty details at www.davecozens.com/n97

Hi,
thanks for the PuTTY review.
I still try to find out if the N97 could be a good replacement for my (good) old PSION. Important for me: Terminal access to devices via serial ports (rs.232). Any experiences using PuTTY in combination with a Bluetooth-to-serial adapter on N97? Does the PuTTY menu contain settings for (generic) serial ports at all?
Just checked for that.
Putty itself doesn't even have options to say which connection you can connect by. Here at home it definitely prefers the WLAN. I even disconnected from that before connecting to a server to see if it would then use the 3G network, but no.
So the answer would appear to be make sure you can persuade the underlying connectivity layer to support this Bluetooth to RS232 connector, and then you might find it works.

Neil
Worked perfectly thanks.. I used this link to get ssh working on my ubuntu desktop.. http://linux-sxs.org/networking/openssh.putty.html
Just copied the ppk file to the phone and presto 😊
Thank you for your response, Neil! Serial port support seems to be not yet included in the Symbian PuTTY implementation. I hope It will be available in the future...
