WTF?

Suggestions anyone....

D

P.S. Cleared the browser cache and it's back to 13mb. But still... that's madness... Took me weeks to fill my n95...

Thats not much :con? Do you install apps on C or on mass memory? Becuase of habit from my N95 I install Apps on C to leave storage for user files.

How much memory does C actually have?

Not sure offhand. Can't check because I'm going to backup and reflash...

I've been installing everything to mass memory, so the only stuff going there is system stuff and out of my control...

C isn't the same as RAM is it? If C fills up it won't make the phone start giving out of memory messages will it?

My understanding is that C stores Text messages and Contacts etc?

Also remember if you use google maps that the map cache has to be cleared from within the programme. I found this can hog quite a bit of space if using maps regularly.

I dunno... If anybody has a definitive answer that'd be good...

Reflashing won't help, just do a *#7370# reset and start a fresh.

Remember as well you have installed a euro firmware on top of a UK one, always best to reset in that scenario.

Once you have reset, only install apps to mass memory, many but not all of the widgets, AP, Bloomberg etc can be found in the OVI Store, download and re-install to mass memory.

Doing this I have 53mb free in C:

After that remember to clear browser cache often.

You are right, C isn't the same as RAM. BUT if you fill C completely, it WILL give lots of trouble!

I tried it on my 5800, where C got filled in no time, and then startet to give warnings about low memory. And when I installed nokia Messaging, I ran out of space, and the phone freezed, and wouldn't do anything at all!

I had to reset it completely, but then I got plenty of space on C, and I didn't got into space problems again.

But I am concerned about the free space on C, on my N97. My 5800 had more free space (can't remember excatly how much now).
I can't understand why Nokia didn't put more memory onto the C?

Half a day later, after clearing cache and deleting evevrything in my inbox in nokia messenging (the push email thingy) I've 31.3mb free...

Watch this space...

Someone should write a file system cleanup temp file deleting tool kinda thang...

I see. :icon14:

It does seem odd that the drive fills up so easily. And, if you don't know to check you could run into problems.

The Bloomberg app asked me if I wanted to update it yesterday so I said yes, but then it asked me where I wanted to install it - to which I wanted to say mass memory, but I knew it was currently on C, so I didn't do it, as I had a feeling that I would end up with a dead instillation on C with no way to delete it... So I removed the app, and then re-installed on mass from the Bloomberg website.

Also, talk of needing 3rd party explorers to delete files is bad, you shouldn't need to do that!

Well no, but it's like with windows. Stuff leaves temp files. Invariably.

We need a tool to clean up temp files. Whether by nokia in the firmware or by a 3rd party...

As far as I experience Symbian , C: (the build-in Device Memory) , is occupied by RAM ( random access memory , which is the actual operating proces Memory ) + all the (inactive) files stored by the User .
I think also Z: ( the firmware ) , is stored in C: in a protected stable pool of Folders/Files .
D: (in which is the Clipboard) seems to be the same as RAM : anyway always the same amount of MB's .
Also user data ( Apps , Contacts , Calendar , Messaging ) are stored hidden in C: . BTW : Messaging can be set to E: ! (Mass storage)
After a rebooting (clears temporary data) , the Ratio C: to RAM = 1 : 2/3 . So when C: = 60 MB , RAM will be around 40 MB .
Concluding : the more C: free the more RAM will be free !! The smoother the Phone is operating .
I like to be corrected !

I had exactly the same problem on mine. I was using MailforExchange which defaults to store the emails in the same location as the contacts. If you change the location of the contacts, emails and all other messages will also change.

Phazelhurst kindly offered these instructions:
1. Click on your inbox
2. Hit Back to go to "Messaging" menu
3. Options Menu
4. Settings
5. Other
6. "Memory in Use" : move it to E: Mass memory.

This works very well. However, you may find as I did, that MailforExchange, the email voice reader and other bits and bobs behave erratically once you have changed this location. Once I'd uninstalled and reinstalled mailforexchange everything worked fine and I haven't had any issue with the D Drive running out of space since.

Hope this helps.

Hit this same problem last night, kept getting messages saying I was low on memory, checked via File Manager and had around 10kb left on the C Drive ! Spent some time moving stuff to E, but will take up the suggestion of moving all messaging also to the C drive, as I've got around 500 texts ( imported from the N95 and quite a few emails! )

cheers.

Notty, i have moved as much as i possibly can out of my c drive, and i haven't used much of mass memory either as i tend to stick everything on memory card at the moment.

I have to say though, i have done two hard resets on my phone and each tiime the c drive memory has gone up considerably, i now have 57.2mb of memory on the c drive.

So, is the conclusion from this discussion that I should do a hard reset of my phone, even though I am not experiencing any particular problems, as this will in effect give me more RAM to play with?

After deleting and moving applications I now have 30 MB free on drive C:. Is it worth the hassle of doing a hard reset?

Frank

I downloaded OTA the QuickOffice 6 upgrade that was offered to me and it automatically installs on C: thus eating up another 4MB of precious memory!

Tried downloading the same upgrade via my PC and upon installation it again installed on C:.

That 4MB represents about 20% of my available C; memory now, even though I have moved all possible widgets/apps/messaging to E: and clear my cache and reset Google Maps once a week.

Surely there must be a way in the next firmware upgrade that Nokia can increase C: by using some of the 32GB on E: or at least move some of the built-in prog's to E:.

Thanks for the tip Angie, I moved as much as I could from the C to the E drive, and also cleared the cache, but free memory only went up to around 8mb.

Looks like a hard re-set is the only way to free up max memory? Its a bit of pain, have to back up, and then restore and all that, just a bit of a bind - or am I being lazy?

<sigh>

Hhhmmmm the two times i've done a hard reset i've HAD to do them ..... i'm not sure i would have done it if i hadn't had to 😊

ooooo and welcome home notty ..... enjoy the rain lol xxx

Also you should reset google maps. That gave me 10mb free. And of course use y browser and delete c/system/cache. Doing it from the browser doesn't always get everything.

Steve l did a good tutorial for clearing up c drive space on this site for the 5800 but it also applies to the n97. Check it out.

Cheers Angie, coming from daily temps of 44c, and scorching heat and dust, its actually quite nice to come back to temps of 18c and rain! Lovely.

You can move messages (SMS, emails etc) to Mass storage but one thing you have to remember is that you will end up disabling the "Mass storage" USB mode. Why? Because the Mass storage requires the memory to be inactive or not used before it can be freed up for the USB connection.

i found a new software update through the software update tool in applications OTA that gave me an extra 20mb in the c drive dont know if anyone else has noticed this yet but if your struggling for space it might be worth a look? Apologies if this has already been pointed out.
