Hi everyone,
I'd like to get my phone firmware upgraded, but I've just spent the last two days configuring the software on it to how I like it (including paid-for installations).
I'm aware that installing the latest firmware will wipe the phone completely. And that if I perform a backup to my PC it'll save all of my contacts, texts, pictures etc. But, will it save all of the programs that I've installed, including passwords for these programs, and the way I have everything set up?
In addition - I can't get the auto update on the phone to work. When I tell the phone to check for updates, it comes up with a "Username and password invalid" error message. Is my only course of action to update the phone via the PC?
Cheers to anyone who can help.

Everything remains; contacts, calendar entries, all your installed programs (and their settings), everything.

From what I've read on this forum the first update is done via pc, all further updates are done OTA.
Thanks Bowman 😊
Out of interest, where abouts in Hertfordshire are you? I work in Hertford.

No problem. Technically I'm in London (I have an 0208 phone number). 😉 I'm at the other end of Herts - Bushey.
Right, I've just done the PC updater, but it says that my firmware (version 10.something) is the latest one...
Can anyone shed some light on this? Is my T-mobile handset not ready for a firmware upgrade?

Correct! I have an unlocked UK spec N97 (bought off contract @ 500) and it told me the same thing. Being impatient I read a few threads about changing the product code of the phone and how to do it. I downloaded the relevant progs and followed the instructions and changed the product code and tried the update again and it told me an update was available. Did the update no problem and now have v11 fw.
If you changed the product code of your T-mobile branded phone and updated it you would have an unbranded and up-to-date phone, free of any T-mobile unwanted extras. However, there are two things to be aware of. First, you could end up bricking your phone (see other threads regarding Vodafone branded phones being bricked - the update seemed to go ok but upon rebooting the phone wouldn't boot). Secondly changing the product code would invalidate your warranty. If the phone has to go back to Nokia for any reason once they connect it to their system it will show that you've changed the product code, they'll let T-mobile know and you'd have to pay for the repair.
So, ultimately the choice is yours. Most operators release new firmware versions months after Nokia do because they have to add all their bits and pieces to it. The downside is you have to wait which is annoying as you have to live with the problems and bugs for a lot longer.
