N97 Firmware Update - My Experiance

Thought I'd write a note here re my upgrade experience which went smoothly & without problem so don't be too scared about all these bricking posts - unless your on Vodaphone it seems.

I just got my N97 today from Carphone warehouse, unlocked. Popped my old O2 sim in & all was fine, but I knew the new firmware had been released yesterday plus I knew it hadn't be released for the UK market & having read of the niggles with the N97 I wanted it now.

Having upgraded from a N95 I'm a Nokia fan & have updated firmware frequently on that & friends phones.

Following these instructions http://nokia5800.net/2009/02/26/changing-product-code-using-jaf/
Had to run Jaf which was a pain as I was unaware of it & kept getting a missing p key error message but an install of OGM JAF PKEY Emulator v3 sorted this problem.
I changed the product code to to 0574380 as I had the black version. (0576350 White version)

Then ran the nokia software updater with the phone connected in PC Suite mode & connected via USB. All went well, at finish phone rebooted & came back on. I had previously set up my wifi point & this setting was retained.

I then did a hard reset for good luck *#7370# & voila, firmware upgrade. Now I have no idea how bad the phone was previously but so far am loving it 😊

Has anybody tried the new version of NSS yet?

Im a bit dubious about debranding the Vodafone N97 based on peoples problems.

yes the new version of nemesis service suite works fine as my friend used it today

So NSS works with N97? did he successfully changed product code on N97 with it?

I did do a check before changing the product code but the software updater lied & told me I was up to date! Thus changedproduct code & then upgrade showed up via NSU.

Their seem to be several ways to change the product code, I initially tried phoenix but this wouldn't work on XP 64 bit & whilst doing that I was also installing JAF on my lappie on plain XP & of course this did work.

Yes seems to be the Vodaphone people who have the problems.

Am enjoying the phone but at the mo am finding a lack of software & older software not working, so far have found no free music playing sofware. On my N95 I had
Core Player - Daughters music
Alon Dictophone - audio Books
Power MP3 - My Music
LGC Jukebox - - My music
Shwarenedde - Audio Books

I found these all really useful as they all saved your place when exiting unlike Nokias bloody music player which never saves. Any decent links yet?

. so what version you saw Today? :con?

Ah it was today I saw the news post 😉 will try 15 as the build I have is 14

Yeah, have to say my update qwas pretty painless too. The slow internet speeds meant the download of 148mb took a while to do , so went out shopping and when I came back it was all done! Didn't have to be prsent during the update, just worked.

The phone seems to be much better now, eg the WLAN now locks on consistently to the home wi fi. Previously the phpne was dropping the connection after half an hour or so. Menu' work quicker too, the whole update process was very smooth and easy.

ok, this latest NSS worked fine. Just changed Product code and flashed my N97. No problems at all.

Yup NSS worked fine but NOT with the latest cable drivers ( might have just been me ) I had to let JAF install an older version and then it seemed to work.

Quite happy with the new firmware its increased the performance no end maybe because I have lots of photos.

Mike.mp wrote:Power MP3 should work on N97, as it work on S60v5 platform.

Power MP3 for some strange reason doesn't see the E Mass Memory Drive & despite giving me the option to view files on my memory card it doesn't actually display these files, but just the basic C: files. This is on version 1.16 which is the only version I have.

LGC Jukebook loads & runs but it's main menu keys relate to the soft keys on the N95 (or similar) & having mangled every key on the N97 none of them seem to work correctly on this 😞

PS, phone just crashed on me, had to remove battery. How daft, One can't get the battery out with out inserting a screwdriver down the side, that's gonna prove to be a pain over time 😞
