Hi everyone,
I got my N97 black on release day on the 3 network.
Managed to brick it on the 1st when trying to upgrade the firmware so I have a few questions.
Luckily, I managed to plead innocence with 3 and get the phone swapped out after "it died" so I have a nice new phone running v10 firmware.
First of all I've noticed a few differences between my 1st N97 and my current one. My latest one DOESN'T have the backlight problem but DOES have the AccuWeather forgetting your position bug. So it seems there are possibly 2 slightly different revisions of the firmware which cause different problems..?
Anyway, should I wait to upgrade my firmware? I've heard NSS now works on S60 5th etc which is good but I've also heard the UK version of the firmware isn't out yet.. Is there any benefit me waiting until it is out?
Also, my phone is the "505" version where as I think the US version is "507" is this right? Could this be why my phone was bricked if I tried to flash the US firmware onto it?
What is the proper "generic" code for the UK black N97?
A lot of questions I know but I can't risk bricking another phone...
Thanks!
Jon.
Dude, seriously! Just wait. Its a few days, maybe even a couple of weeks but you've already bricked one phone. Why risk another. My UK unbranded N97 is also on the old firmware.
Yeah there's bugs but I'm managing just fine. I'm deffo not gonna risk having no phone at all and having to tell fibs to about it just dying to get a new one.
How do you know it's a few days? I like a lot of people like to be up-to-date and I believe my phone should work from the word go. Having a working alarm is a pretty basic function which should work!!
whats wrong with your alarm? mine works just fine, not heard of any problems with it
If its a 3 branded phone it will have it's own product code and its most likly you will have to wait possibly months for 3 to release their own variant.
You have three options.
1) Flash the phone with the UK Code ( this is different than "3"s product code ) using NSS or Jaff ) which shouldn't brick the phone. You should then get updates with nokia release generic firmware for the UK Codes.
2) Flash the Phone with Euro 1 and then repair with JAFF.
3) Use JAFF to flash the phone straight to version 11 and change the code to Euro 1 ( It's possible but ive never done it before. Search around the other threads for a link to instructions on flashing both working and dead N97s.

You've really never heard of it?
You should take a look on the official Nokia forum http://discussions.nokia.co.uk/discussions/board/message?board.id=smartphones&thread.id=143744

Unplugged, do you know what the UK code is?
Take a look under the battery it will have the product code.
0570817: RM-505_EMEA_EURO_QW1 Black
0576350: RM-505_EMEA_EURO_QW1 White
0585162: N97 UK CV B
0587240: N97 UK CV W
0585624: N97 UK Orange
0585262: N97 VF UK B ( Vodafone )
0588469: N97 VF UK W ( Vodafone )
if your euro you can download now - UK Variant will be in a few days anything else and you will have to wait until your network pull their fingers out.

Oh dear, that site is far too depressing, did i really pay 500 for it?
....quickly put head back in sand.....
buts its shiny 🙄
to be fair, for all its faults, it still runs better now that my N95 did after all the fireware upgrades...

new bug noticed- i've lost the ability to type and use grammer properly.....
lol everyone expects bugs in the first firmware but sometimes you wonder how the hell anyone can say a firmware is "ready" with such a vast array of glaringly obvious ones.
Conditional stuff that happens in certain conditions fair enough but when you can take the phone out of the box and find so many simple stupid bugs just in general set-up and usage you have to wonder what the hell Nokia's testing team are doing.

you're 100% correct, but pragmatically speaking we all expected this didn't we? the reviews indicated that the phone was buggy and it was obviously rushed to come out the same week as the new I$hite
i think they tested it, found loads of bugs, but realised they couldn't fix them all and still meet the deadline........

OK Cool, thanks.
My code under the battery is: 0586308
So, in theory, I could change it to 0570817: RM-505_EMEA_EURO_QW1 Black and get the firmware update?
I think I might still wait a few days for the UK one if it's worth it?
I've heard that 3 are very slow at releasing firmware updates so I can't wait months and months to have my niggly bugs fixed...
You can change it and run NSU however you may run into the same problems as everyone else.
I *think* changing it to
0585162: N97 UK CV B
will give you unbranded version 10 software and then that should update to 11 when they release it in a couple of days. Going to Euro 1 will give you 11 however im not sure if it will have "issues" with the old 3 software as it is with the vodafone one.
Unplugged,
I have a n97 with code 0570817 but still unable to update in the UK via NSU...no update found
Help
No reason why you shouldn't.
I assume your phone doesent already have v11 on it?
phone is currently on V10.0.012 and I have tried the update service (FOTA) and all i get is a server error...oohhh man
Will try again when I get home this evening but the NSu basically came back and said the device had the latets release
Hmm well I've just spoken to 3 and they said that they release the firmware on the same day they receive it from Nokia...
Not sure whether to believe that but I might give it another week or two before I risk having a brick...

This is me 😊. And I got my phone on contract 😊. Does this mean I can update the moment the UK firmware is released then?
Cheers
😎
I got my N97 on Orange last week & the code is 0587240. Presume this means I've got the generic UK firmware? BTW it works with my O2 Sim card so presume Orange ship their phones unlocked? Or did I just get lucky?
This thread appears to have got slightly off topic? Does anyone have any updates as to when the firmware is coming out?
Its getting silly now, its almost a week on and still saying nothing available!!

Yep. Im on the same code, and waiting for the v11 firmware to pop ...
still no news on uk sim free firmware? dont nokia know we have the same bugs as the rest of the world😡
Still no update available for the german version with the product code 0586702. I really cannon understand why they only release the update for some product codes...
I've got this page bookmarked and theres been no change to the current version of 0585162 being on v10:
