Anybody know of any applications that will make the display behave traditionally ( dim or turn the back light off rather than blanking the screen completely )
I use the phone in the car to stream music and once the display turns off I can't see what track im on.
I also tend to leave my phone on in the desk on charge (docked) when im in the office and its an annoyance having to press menu and unlock as opposed to just tapping the screen as I have done with every other touch screen phone.
I'll bump this as I'd like to know the answer.
By the way how do you dock your N97, I was scouring ebay for a desktop cradle for it but so far it seemed nothing had been released?
i've just downloaded a trial version of SmartLight, i haven't played with it much yet but ....
It seems at the light will stay on if you're running an app like music, messages or facebook, but not for homescreen, menu etc
Anyway for those that like to see the screen whilst playing music this seems to be ideal - check out the trial version for yourself anyway 😉
xx
Going to bump this as i've just spent 20 minutes looking through the OVI store for SmartLight and be damned if i could find it!
There's one called backlight that costs 1.50 but it's got mixed reviews..

about 3 seconds on google seemed to find me a pile of links to it...

Might give this a whirl, will be good for Maps when you are just looking at the Map and aren't 'navigating'.
This will be ideal! I stream music in the car too and have the same issue.
As a solution I turned auto lock off, but the maximum time you can set the screen to stay on is not very long - this would be ok but weirldy, only a press of a button will put the light back on where as I'd have thought a touch of the screen should also do it.
When driving I don't want to be faffing about pressing buttons, I just want to swipe the screen to re-activate.
Anyway, will give this app a go! :icon14:
Installed.
Loaded music player and then checked that the app was running in the background, which is was.
After maybe 5 mins, the light went off and on checking the apps that are running, Smartlight wasn't.
Is this because the app is a trial?
EDIT: I thought I would reboot the phone to see if that fixed it, but all that did was to disable completely the screen rotation feature, even when keyboard was out. Rebooted again, still the same problem. Re-booted a 3rd time and now the screen rotates again! God this phone needs the new Firmware ASAP!!
Anyway, came to the conclusion that it was the 'trial' nature of the app that was closing it.
I would prefer that the N97 screen behave like my old Nokia 9300 did.
After a period of time (1 min), the screen would go to reduced intensity for period of time (30 sec) before finally turning off.
With the N97 you have to press the menu button and if you're too late and it has already locked then the unlock slider.
Ovi store are selling "backlight" for 1.50
If you disable the automatic keylock then this app will allow your light to stay on until you manually lock via the side switch.

Found a free solution.
Download 'Watch' from Ovi. This app keeps the backlight on, so as long as its running you can boot up the music player and the back light stays on. :icon14:

Do you mean 'Watch Lite Touch'? If so, the app is no longer available (although it still appears in the OVI Store search).
Do you still have the installation file?
