N97 Quake 2 benchmark

Those of you interested.. (otherwise a useless post).

I ran the timedemo benchmark on the N97 for Q2.. (640x480? or 640x360?)

Anyway.. its about 12.9 FPS (standard no sound, no sync etc for benchmarking)

Works out to be about AMD K6-2 350 quality or a Celeron 300a level when I referred it back to benchmarks I have done years ago..

sigh.. would have loved to run this in GL mode (if only it had the 3D accelerator inbuilt like the N95/82).. would have been perfect!

Do you by any chance have a working config file for the N97? In both Quake and Quake2, I can navigate through the menus with the d-pad, but can't select any of the options. I tried the dpad button, green softkey and enter and no luck. Not sure what to change the bindings to.

I would also like to know the answer to this...my N97 is really disappointing me; with no soft key other than send and answer many programs are screwed up. And I can't find any signed versions of Virtual Key or Magic Keys, signing isn't working for me and so with the excellent Quake ports I can just watch the demo. If Hinkka would compile a version that doesn't use these keys I think many people would be very grateful.

Or perhaps you used a Bluetooth keyboard for the fps test?

I actually cheated to get the soft keys out by one of two methods:

1) I have an external BT Keyboard (Nokia SU-8W) that HAS soft keys and that I was able to get it going this way (yes, it still works like a charm - installing the S60 9.2 drivers!)

2) Using a soft-keyboard app that allows for softkeys to be presented on the screen in a certain location. This way, you can access it on screen.

Once you have this, you can access the console and run the timedemo's from the internal keyboard..

Thanks for the response. I figured a bluetooth keyboard would work, but I'd really like to know which soft-keyboard app you use...I was trying the key mapping programs, which after repeated attempts to get signed I still couldn't load them. Thanks,

Z

Yeah, it was a lame choice with the soft keys...and there was a built in virtual keyboard in the prototypes, but it then they dropped it for the release! Oh well, I still can't sign apps and so I guess I'll just play N-Gage games until then...no wait, N-Gage lists the N97 as a supported phone, you just can't download or install it...

Hey there, I'm looking for some help to get Quake 2 running 😊

I've impeccably followed at least five different guides to installing Quake 2 on the Nokia N97, but I it just won't run.

All I can think of at this point is that the problem somehow is firmware/product code related. Does anyone have any suggestions? 😊

Cheers

Although I agree with you about the sad lack of inbuit 3D accellerator, I do think that 12.9FPS is reasonable for a small screen handheld device. After all the N97 is a smart phone, not a dedicated games console, and the addition of a 3D accellerator chip would no doubt reduce battery life and thus generate negative threads on AAS about battery life?

Thanks for the information, I might install Quake on my N97, as I previously thought FPS rates were in the low single figures without 3D chip.

I guess the exercise was more to compare how powerful the ARM11 is to the regular Intel desktop CPU. I agree that double digits is pretty playable (since I didnt have a dedicated GPU to play Q2 during the early days on my K6-350). It just goes to show a 416Mhz ARM11 is roughly equal to K6-350 or an P2/Celeron-300. This is pretty respectable since the Intel is a CISC chip with way more cache and transistors than an ARM11.

For the record, the problem was related to copying/installing the required files to the memory card (like most guides state), when the mass memory must be used on the N97 in order for the ports to run 😊
