Meh.

The N97 wasn't as great as it's cracked up to be. The firmware is buggy and there's no apps.

There's no GPS for it, unless you count Garmin. TomTom have stopped anything to do with Symbian, Route 66 still don't work despite there being a version for the i8910, and McGuider seems to have stopped selling CDs.

SportsTracker just does not seem to be available anymore, theres no inbuilt SIP, Skype has gone out of the window and the majority of the updates from Nokia are beta versions, like the photos, and the messaging. Which I mean, really. Messaging? It couldn't get any simpler. And when I tried setting it up, it couldn't understand I could have a different username to my email account.

Apart from the 32 Gig memory, Dual LED Flash, 5 MP Camera, and slide out keyboard, it's no different to Android or iPhone!

And where's the firmware for the uk?

Useless Nokia.

I agree. The V11 Firmware is a bit better, but still a long way to go, regretting my puchase a bit and hope Nokia respond to peoples complaints.

500 is a lot for a gadget that's not up to the task it's advertised as.

Come on Nokia, pull your finger out.

To be honest... I like the phone. I like the touch screen operation, the slide out keyboard, the massive pile of memory. I got the McGuider DVD, so navigation is fine.

Yes, the phone so now and then hangs, needs a restart, maybe software can be improved. But is this really diffent than the previous releases? My N93 was way more buggy when I got that. The iPhone on release could not record video, did not have 3G, etc. etc.

I think that firmware releases will solve a lot of the things we are complaining about now.

The only thing that I really really REALLY hate is the new Nokia Music tool... Just reading the music from my phone to show the content takes already 5 minutes... It's soooooooo slow... I wish I could reinstall the old Music Manager... This was buggy as well, but it was way faster than this...

RE: the music, have you tried just using windows explorer? That's what I use and it's quick and simple. 😊

That's what I am doing now... I liked the recoding to AAC(+) though on the old version of the music tool though...

Your quite wrong.
There is Garmin XT as you mention, which is quite good.
And, there is obviously, Nokia Maps 3, which is very good.

Nokia Sports Tracker is available for s60v5.
Try googling it.

If you want internet calls, fring is available.

By the way, i've only had my N97 for about 2 week and i've got 35 apps installed.

No different from iphone? Have you seen the horrible phone function of iphone?

After the 3rd iteration, they finally made a big splash about their new OS3:
- Can cut and paste -> big whoop, Nokia phones (or in face any other brands can do that long time ago)
- Can use the phone as a modem -> helloooooo, my Nokia phone could be used as a modem, like... 8 years ago (granted it is slow as a snail at that time)
- Can take video -> WOW! Nokia can do that years ago

And can you remember iphone can't even forward SMS, cannot handle MMS, and simply doesn't work with some SIM cards in certain countries? iPhone also has only 3 megapixel, with poorer lens.

N97 has way better hardware and screen resolution.

Of course, it depends a lot on the user. If you are used to solid phone functions that simply work, then you will find iphone very frustrating. Seriously. If you like gimmicky stuff, lots of fun apps, then iphone is the one. And iphone wins the interface war, hands down.

Nokia is very new to the whole touch screen business, so there are not many apps written for N97 yet. Hopefully more will come. Pricing issue wise, I think many old Symbian writers are used to pricing their apps above USD 10. iphone business model completely changed the user perception, so now, anything above USD 5 is seen as a ripoff. Let's hope also more app writers will price their apps lower for the volume.

Ovi. Agree with you that it sucks. Now.
BUT, I can see they are trying very hard to improve. Hopefully the effort will pay off. I'm a long time Nokia user so I'm very forgiving.

For me, I've installed:
1. Fring - for instant messaging with Skype, MSN, google
2. Worldmate is still my favourite since years back as I travel alot. 4 clocks, currency update, weather, and it's all free (unless you want Pro). New interface is nice.
3. Handwriting calculation - nice to scribble calculations instead of pressing buttons
4. World Traveller - a good alternative to Worldmate
5. Searchme - nice preview search
6. Roadsync - good email sync with my office
7. Sportstracker - nuff said
8. isilo for reading ebooks
9. Straits times - good widget for news
10. APNews - as (9)
11. Calories
12. Buses@SG - local bus guide for Singapore

Skype is supposed to be releasing in P9, I heard.

Then of course the preinstalled widgets like Facebook, Bloomberg, Amazon etc works nicely.

as for navigation you can use Ndrive

http://www.ndriveweb.com/products/product/35/

installed it on my N95 8GB, maps are the most up to date maps i have ever seen, there are a couple of new developments in our area that are not even on google maps or nokia maps but are on Ndrive, Plus it runs so smooth it like a 3D racing game 😊 give it a try.

and its cheap 45 euro for GB and IR maps. compatible with 5800 and N97.

ah forgot to say that routing is really good as well, on par with Garmin and nokia maps - thats what i think at least.

the only downside is that it drains the battery a bit faster than garmin - i think

Ahh, but Im not wrong am I.

Yes Garmin XT and the Beta Maps 3. Still not the greatest and loses GPS signal every so often. Driving back to day, keps showing me in the middle of fields.

Sports Tracker may be available on Google, but it's not in the SportsTracker website which means it's been pulled. Some kind of bug? Problem?

Fring is not an inbuilt SIP client and was seriously bloated last time I saw it on the N95. Just more functionality stripped out of the N97. Yeah, the N97 has more, but parts have been stripped out along the way.

And the OVI store is reportedly rather poor. Certainly I've had a look, can't see anything. Where are all the widgets?

Not impressed.

What apps have you got that aren't trivial common or garden chintz?

Anything serious?

Regarding GPS, how about Co-Pilot?
I've had it on my previous and current pocket PC and it has never let me down.
Am considering buying version 7 for Symbian for my N97 from expansys.

I think the biggest dissapointment for N97 is the amount of RAM and the (resulting?) restarts. This kills the offering I think. Omnia hd eats it for breakfast it seems. Sadly for Nokia...

There is IM+ for Skype, and as of today there is quite a few new 'Touch' games which have been added to the Ovi store priced at 1 pound.

I too, am woefully disappointed with the N97 😞 Having gone through N80, N95, N95 8gb and currently N96 (Which is ok, but battery life is horrendous) I was REALLY looking forward to the N97... Whenever Orange decided to release it..

Decided last week that I could wait no more, BUT borrowed a friends N97 whilst he was away on hol, and put my SIM in it... It is on the latest firmware apparently..

What a slow buggy interface, and the touchscreen is horrendous... Random lock ups, slow response... And to top it all, there are LOTS of reports of the camera lens cover actually scratching the lens glass covering, affecting the photo and video recording.

No, for me, I was not impressed, and so glad that I didn't get one - Orange are apparently NOT going to be offering it direct, and they have discontinued the N96 also....

After a lot of research and endless tours of the shops to get "hands on" I have a Samsung i8910HD on it's way to me as we speak...

Obv this is just my own opinion, but the lens problem is quite widespread...

Not what you expect from a "Flagship" phone...
