N97 Free Software

I've just knocked up a quick website, which I'm calling "Dave's N97 Freeware Collection".

It's at http://davecozens.com/n97/ and you can add links yourself.

I'm going to add the ability to rank & comment on the stuff listed and (eventually) a widget for the n97 with a feed and homescreen widget...

Opinions appreciated...

Totally awesome dude. I was like Oh My God, this is so radical, it's off the hook...

Sorry for the cringeworthy American speak, too much coffee. Well, I am sitting in Starbucks right now!

Seriously though, it's a great resource and a big thank you for going to all that effort, from one N97 user, a big thumbs up!

One freebie I like and it came pre-installed on my phone but it's available through the Ovi shop, is Psiloc World Traveller, but there was a poster on here who was having problems with it, so don't know how reliable it is.

Your webpage has now been bookmarked!

Cheers

I hooked up my phone with mobbler >>Thanks to you Dave<< to the sound system and now listening to some tunes. Thank you again

love the compass app - dunno why Nokia MADE you use the Maps to get the compass as opposed to having a separate compass app as well. 😊

Hi Dave, This is great thanks, you should add Google Ads or something so we can "donate" 😉

Right. I've added a bunch of google ads...

Now if only I could find some way of making people click on them...

I'm just going through applications I've found at this address:

http://symbianworld.org/s60-5th-edition-freeware-downloads-for-nokia-5800-n97/

They're all free; maybe there're some there you haven't tried and you could add to your own site.

[EDIT] I'll leave feedback on here on the ones I've tried.

[EDIT #2] OK These are my thoughts on the Apps I tried:

MobilePaint - Not as good as Paint Pad, which is also free.
iBaptiste - It's just a soundboard of voices from a dance song (can't remember what the song is called though).
Whack-A-Mole - Does exactly what it says on the tin. Poor graphics but if you like whackamole games then this should do the job.
Phone Torch - Uses the flash as a torch so open your lens cover and close the camera app before using. Might be useful...
Touch Piano - Disappointing. Doesn't use full screen unless you open the phone. 1-2 second delay between key press and a played note
Touch Guitar - Also disappointing. Hard to use, doesn't strum properly, only uses full screen when phone open.
Barcode Reader - It's Nokia's barcode reader, the same as the one on the N95.
XpressBeer - Slow and horrible. Is this because of lack of 3d graphics acceleration? Needs python.
SpaceDancer - A space/dance GuitarHero-style game. Press dots when the flying red lines hit them. Didn't like it.... but... it had a rudimentary form of multi-touch on it (?????)
Meteor - Interesting version of Breakout. Uses touchscreen to move your spaceship (aka paddle). Only a demo though, and it's a bit slow.
Checkers - Simple touch-optimised checkers game. Graphics as good as it gets (for a board game).
PowerMP3 - Seems alright but most of my music is on my memory card... which it doesn't check (only looks in Phone Memory and Mass Storage)
Blackboard - It's the same one that was recently added onto the Ovi Store for 1.50 or something.
TouchCalc60 - It's a java app... but it's a full scientific calculator.
barcoo - Scans barcodes (the real ones) and identifies what they are online. Sadly it's all in German.
BMI Calculator - Tells you your Body Mass Index score when you put in your height and weight. Seems pretty good (and accurate) but should consider sex and age as well.

Well, I'm up to 31 free N97 apps now (thanks zxon). I'm avoiding java stuff for now, concentrating on native s60 and widgets. Some are non-expiring shareware but useful so I've included them and mentioned their sharewareness...

You can sort them by name, rating and date added.

If you find something I've missed, let me know...

Dave

Now at 43 bits of free software for the N97. With screenshots (mostly).

Also featuring: -

  • Tag cloud style search
  • App ratings
  • RSS Feed
  • Daily email updates

Feature requests anybody?

Just another spammy update. I've managed to find 44 free native apps (non java) that work on the N97... had a few false starts with some 5800 stuff that didn't work on screen 😞

The site now lets you rate and comment on software on a separate detail page.

Plus you can search by tag, view a screenshot, download it...

If I've missed any great free software, let me know...

Lots of those apps are already on davecozens' extensive list, but there're a couple that aren't though so thanks for the link. I've been trying to get hold of photoflow for a while now to see what its like.

Theoretically 5800 apps should work on the N97 because they use the same OS, however there are a handful that've been identified that don't work quite as well as hoped.
