Samsung Italy have released a fairly major (I8910XXIG2) firmware update for the i8910 HD (Omnia HD as it's branded in Italy). The biggest change is to re-enable AAC (8bit 16KHz. mono) as the media codec for HD video recording. A video example, taken on the new firmware, is posted below.

Unless theyve fixed the browser crashing, getting slower and slower until finally(after about a week) requiring a hard reset to get it back to decent speed. And hundreds of other things that are bugged or just plain stupid(why cant the phone show the alphanummerical keyboard in portrait and then automatically switch to landscape qwerty when I tilt the phone over?
This phone has the best hardware in the world coupled with some of the worst software.

Well, there goes the last reason to choose Nokia over Samsung. Samsung DOES listen to feedback afterall, fixes the problems and fixes them relatively quickly!

I wish there were more attention to this phone. It's always about the 5800 and the N97, but the i8910 is just so much better in so many respects! The screen of course, the camera, the incredibly fast hardware inside. The fact you can play unconverted xvids out of the box. The fastest GPS I ever saw. The great capacative touchscreen with haptic feedback. The great audio quality. And so on!!

@ tenkom, they fixed the browser, it is now much smoother and faster, no crashing, they've fixed the annoying duplicating of files in the gallery, made the qwerty keyboard and widgets much more responsive.

no idea about the slowing part, I've had mine for a month now, and It's chock full of videos/photos/emails/texts/music and it's still as fast as when I bought it.

And hundreds of other things that are bugged or just plain stupid(why cant the phone show the alphanummerical keyboard in portrait and then automatically switch to landscape qwerty when I tilt the phone over?

that's just symbian 5th edition, not samsung, the n97 and the 5800 do the same thing as well.

Why does it say in the article that its only really available in the UK on Orange when it has been on sale SIM free from Play since late June?😕

Have they launched the update service for it in the UK, even if their is no actual updates, or is it still up in the air?

Well that's annoying. I checked with the orange website and saw no mention of wifi on the i8910....
I might have considered upgrading to it if I had known this.

Oh well, in three months my contract expires and I'll see what's available then 😊

Looks like i'll be switching back to Orange in september as my upgrade preferences are 1) i8910, 2) TG01 (god, that thing is HUGE!). There's just nothing else that's 'doing it' for me. Good to see Samsung throwing up firmwares.

What DOES surprise me here is the way Samsung have got very little stick.. They released a phone that didn't synch it's audio to its own video! What a bunch of clowns! On it's own device's main selling point! 😮)

I'm waiting for the Sony Ericsson Xperia Rachel. An android device with huge high res screen. The device will be much smaller than the TG01...

This will be the king of the hill.

johnnyN, the omniaHD never had audio syncing problems, it was the player on your pc that did it..

@JohnnyN:

The i8910 DOES have wifi and there were NO audio synching issues. It seems to me that the clown is, in fact, you.

Ah right, I see. Apologies. I was misinformed. But the audio quality was terrible in it's original release. My point really was that the Nokia haters were so quick to denounce any slight flaw in their devices but were silent when this was released. I'd say that this was a case of "ball dropped by Samsung" but I suppose you may not want to admit that : o )

Thanks for the link - spent all afternoon trying to get it to work and it wouldn't - tried it again after your post and it seems to be working now

Good job perhaps I speak some Italian😊

And before I get slammed as a Nokia lover. I am considering getting this device when my contract ends. Firmware updates for handsets that are rushed out onto the market seem to be common nowadays. It's a shame. Even the iphone has this problem (wifi issues)

Once again, you are misinformed. There are literally tens of thousands of posts around the internet complaining about the audio quality from the initial release; from people who actually own the device.

Some people actually want the best from their phone instead of keeping quiet and thinking-up false issues in other manufacturers' products due to the brand loyalty that they're quick to deny. Remember that, JohnnyN...

Has anyone been able to make this work? I've installed an italian ie4 firmware and tried the Update software but it still says "Your phone is no supported"

You contradict yourself by claiming that I'm making up false issues straight after agreeing that there was a fault with the i8910! You can have these clownshoes back sir.

The clown shoes never left you, my friend. YOU were the one who made up no wifi and out-of-synch audio.

Nope, you can have them back along with a red nose and a funny hat, as I never claimed there was no wifi on the samsung, merely that Orange never advertised it as being a feature. Now run along.

For me I've noticed these things in the new firmware:

- much improved browser performance
- seems like a slight speed increase everywhere (was already very fast)
- 16kH 256kbps AAC encoded sound on video (sounds very good now) along with improved FPS
- camera now remembers user settings between sessions (like blink recognition on etc)
- few new widgets, the WiFi one being very welcome for me
- improved keyboard response times
- two new games (brain challenge and Texas Holdem poker)
- the download app (my V7 Polish firmware was missing this...)
- fixed the bug that wouldn't let me assign my own email alert tone (now I have Futurama's Bender declaring "I have mail", small thing, it makes me very happy with Roadsync true push HTML email...)
- they claim other stability fixes, but I can't see where, it was already the most stable early-release S60 phone I've ever owned...

EDIT: Oh yes, HelloOX works too

EDIT EDIT: Samsungi8910omnia has all the files and instructions needed to get the italian firmware. I used the flashing tool to get mine up to V7 Italian firmware, then the PC Suite detected an update was available.

....Always behind the last runner about everything we have the most updated firmware. Only a little reason to be proud to be italian. Remember, the only one.

The whole list sounds really nice, but I think I shall wait for the regular update. Reason being that the Omnia is already performing very well and I wouldn't like to spoil something on the way of flashing the phone. Plus do you lose warranty by doing this?

Since I'm already having problems with the phone constantly hanging, on simple things like just writing SMS, with nothing running in the background, I won't take the risk, since I don't know if my phone has some hardware problem. Suspecting mass storage faulty / corrupted, cause files copied to the phone sometimes play and sometimes don't... idk
