Questions about OTA Updates

I've never had a phone that supported OTA updates, so I have a couple of questions about it.

Is updating OTA the same as updating using NSU... Except you can do it anywhere?

I've noticed I can update via *#0000# and via SW Update... Is the former for firmware and the latter for seperate components or are they both the same?

Now settings are kept when you update... Is anything lost whatsoever?

Is it still worth backing up the phone before an update anyway?

Is the phone's backup facility enough to restore everything (except anything on mass storage) after an update?
Thanks in advance.

1. Yes, its the same, however, more safer, and smaller file size.
2. SW Updater is for installed Applications. You can get Nokia Messaging this way. *#0000# is for Firmware Updates.
3. Depends on Handset. N97 for instance has UDP (User Data Preservation) so nothing is lost when updating.
4. You should always backup as a precaution.
5. In theory, yes, however, i sync to OVI, and Nokia Image Exchange.

How is it safer? Is it because you don't have to worry about your computer going to pot during the update?

Yeah I was talking about the N97. My N95 never had User Data Preservation.

Not a bad idea. I've sync'd to Ovi once when I got the phone... and that was it. Might do it again...

Search the forums for "Red Bend Technology" and all should become clear. Steve interviewed the guys behind FOTA tech used, and was shown a demo of a device updating FOTA, and having its battery rmoved part way through. Think it was a N79 that was shown.
