Version RM-506: Capable of Wifi when flashed?

Hey,

I just bought an N97 and got the nasty surprise it didnt have Wi-fi. It is the RM-506 Chinese model. Now I am wondering whether this is a limitation of the firmware or that the phone is truly made incapable of Wi-Fi
Will flashing it to 505 activate it?

Many thanks for your help

Thats IF you can even do it in the first place without bricking the phone. Its quite often taboo to use another product code from another family to try and update that as even the smallest of differences can cause undesired effects (eg. wrong bandwidths, or memory allocation errors etc). Be aware that as soon as you change your product code, your phone is no longer covered by warranty.

But check the frequencies first. I think 506 is using 900Mhz

I wouldn't use a HongKong code, they have WiFi on but FM disabled.
try a Singapore 505 code.

Good Luck! and I didn't encourage you if it fails! 😉

I think but I might be wrong if the phone has a different number after the RM or whatever, it has a different hardware specs.

So due to legal issues Nokia releases its phones to china without WiFi or 3G and I think in this case they simply did not install the hardware chip at all, so IF you manage to flash the phone with another devices firmware what you will be simply getting is an OS with WiFi but not the chip that is commands.

I would return it if I were you.

Thanks for your suggestions.

Indeed, before attempting to flash, I want to know whether the hardware is present.

It's already several months after your last post about this subject but what did you found out? What in the end did you do? I have the same problem and I would like to solve it.
