Is anyone else having trouble getting internet access via GPRS on Orange in the UK? WAP over GPRS is working fine using the built-in browser, but if Opera or the Email account I've set up try to go through the standard GPRS account, then I either get an error message saying "not ready" or "calls not allowed". It's not the setup of the mail account or Opera at fault, they work fine if I use a dial-up internet account.
I've spoken to Orange about this, and they've gone through my settings, which appear to be fine. I even asked them to force a SIM update, but to no avail. It's been passed to their tech support dept., who will get back to me in "48-72 hours" (yeah, right! 😉 )
Just to make sure that it definitely IS a problem with my setup, can someone just confirm that they have got GPRS (not just GPRS-WAP) working on Orange?
Consider it confirmed - I got Orange to enable GPRS on my account and about ten minutes later I was bankrupting myself by browsing the web using Opera... I have also sent and recieved e-mails using my 3rd party provided mail service over Orange GPRS.
TipicME works really well too 😃

Yes I've got it working well (Opera, Email, as modem via bluetooth to my Mac etc.). I was told that I had to have a 7 MB GPRS bundle because the smaller GPRS bundles only work with WAP. Could that be the nature of your problem?
Hey Mark I guess that the fact that you have spoken to Organge that you do have full web access on your account not just wap, you must use a different APN, some phone operators do not realy know this yet and I have had plenty of problems with this.
I cant help you directly because I dont use Orange but one thing you can try if you are getting wap access and not full html access is to check that under Control panel / WAP accounts / Preferred the Use WAP account box is not ticked, for some reason some people have found this has some effect.

Thanks all for your help!
I'm pretty sure I asked for the 7MB bundle when I set it up, but I'll ring them to make sure.
I have the 2 MB package with Orange, and that is fully functional GPRS. I did have to phone them and get a sim update for it to work though!
I just kept getting the message not activated! come up every time I tried to connect before. If was fixed the same day I got the phone.
Strange, I did'nt even ask for GPRS enabling.
I've barely had time to use the phone and have been using WAP with GPRS and WEB. Ok, not through opera.
I press the blue button and up flashes an internet page using GPRS.
Now to find the forum page that hopefully tells me how to disable the blue button ! Or to save me paying 2.70 per Mb I should ask Orange to disable GPRS.
Mind you it is very, very fast.
Steve.
Gazcart... if you are not with Orange, who are you with? I am trying to work out who is the best value provider to source a P800 through considering I will be needing a new mobile plan too!

Just spoke to ORANGE on their FAX/DATA support line (156 from your ORANGE phone) and the 2mb bundle will work fine unless you hammer the net that is....
Regarding unable to connect I only got my phone yesterday and this evening signed up for the 2mb bundle but cannot get access (invalid) however it takes 24 hours to connect you once subscribed....
Will update you tomorrow if all goes well.
Hi,
I was having gprs problems where I was getting error message on the status bar at the bottom of the screen which said Calls restricted calls not allowed (gprs) after phoning orange and going through all the settings and stuff, the actually solution for me in any case was to phone orange and basically i got them to disable and then re-enable gprs on my account. This involved two sim updates and for each one i read/deleted and then turned phone off and back on with taking the battery out for a couple of seconds.
Hope this helps
Craig Henry
I dont underrstand why people want to use gprs its way too expensive, open up a couple of web pages and you are well on the way to a MB and thats crazy money. Im connecting to the 700 orange plan with free phone and will use the extra minutes (for 4 months anyway) to connect at 14.4 dialup

Beware - If you use anything over 9.6kbps for dialup it does NOT come out of your bundled minutes!
There are seperate plans for HSCSD (anything from 14.4 upwards) that make it cheaper, but GPRS is faster - simple as that really.
I think I know wher the problem some people have with being billed for GPRs traffic might come from. I asked to be put on a GPRS tariff when I bought my P800, and the bloke signed me up for the Orange Access Pack. This is actually not what I asked for, and is a completely different deal. With the access pack you get free WAP data, but only WAP.
That means any accessing of POP/IMAP folders or Opera browsing you do you get charged for at the 'pay as you go' rate i.e. 3 per MB or part of MB.
Needless to say I'm not too chuffed with Carphone Warehouse about this.
i had problems too all the setting were fine
turns out i didnt have gprs enabled
suddenly internet (gprs wap) worked and MMS and gprs stopped
after a long testing all settings i got put on the 'passed over to
tech support' list, then the next morning( this morning 6-03-03) it all suddenly started working! mms, gprs, opera, email etc
previously sometimes it would pick up email over night
on the schedules but NEVER ona get and send
anyway its all working fine now!!
must be some setting at oranges end thats rejecting GPRS connections
now im obviously permissioned
I never received the call back from Tech Support, but internet over GPRS is now working, so they must have sorted it out! 😃

According to the HSCSD pages on www.orange.co.uk anything upto and including 14k4 is charged at the same rate as 9k6, and therefore I would assume taken from your bundled minutes.
Only an assumption though as although I have used 14k4 HSCSD I never look at my bills deeply enough to work out the costs... :-?
Can anyone confirm/deny this "P800 on SPV GPRS 6 a month" rumour? I was just about to buy GPRS Bundle 7 @ 15 a month 😞
The SPV-type tariff has indeed been rumoured, however there have been no confirmations from anyone at Orange.
I've just got off the phone with OCS and they have not heard anything at all about it. Repeated tries to get the same deal on my P800 as for the SPV have failed too...
Looks like bundle 4 for me!

GPRS is set on my machine (bottom left Network: Orange. GPRS: Attached) but everytime I try and log on I get the error
(Logon Failed)
I have contacted Orange twice today and gone through the settings twice but still no joy?
Anyone have any ideas please?
If you're able to use WAP & MMS over GPRS, then it sounds like you've got the same problem I had. Either keep on at Orange until they send the problem to the tech department, or just ask for it to be referred straigt to them.
