Sam_man wrote:hi guys, got an exchange of 3 UK today and installed garmin and its working really good, infact very very accurate. nokia maps works really good too.

on my first hadnset the accuracy was at best 125m but on this new one is about 20-25m using GPS info tool.

on my last handset garmin was working fine too untill i updated nokia maps 3.1 so i think it must be a software/driver issue.

i think it might be one of the following

*nokia maps 3.1
or
*formatting mass memory
or
*there was a programs called API bridge and unistalled it

reinstalling firmware or hard reset didnt help, so on my new one i wont be doing any on those things. at the moment im really happy with my N97 😊

UPDATE: this piece of shit worked nicely for about 4 days and now its started to lagg i.e. 100 yrd behind, i havent installed any new software, didnt drop it or done anything else that i could effect its GPS (Global Piece of Shit). and the weather is more or less the same. so what the hell is wrong then? works for few days then starts to go wrong? WTF nokia, i HATE you, i HATE you and i HATE you, i hope you rott in hell.

this is my last nokia, had enough of getting screwed by them handset after handset.

im so mad 😡😡😡😡😡😡

That should be the next N97 ad campaign tagline...

"The new Nokia N97 - the N95s retarded younger brother"

Or pehaps it's autistic - it knows what it's doing - the rest of us, not an effin clue...

Between this an Biggsy's slider fix...we'll all have voided our warranties by "modding" our N97's.

[the YouTube video in the previous post is for adding a little bit of copper wire to the internal GPS antenna which enables it to get a very quick and accurate GPS fix].

Now we just need someone to show us how to overclock the N97!

yes, to about 550-600mhz.

From the video I could not tell exactly what he was connecting the wire to. He said "antenna" but in my N97 NAM there is what looks to be a piece of perforated shapped plastic in that general location. Is this the antenna?

Or was he connecting to the recessed screw head?

Does the wire need to be bare copper? I have a hard time with leaving a long piece of bare wire in the battery compartment where it could come into contact with other circuits.

It does make sense though as once other blogger noted--his GPS got a rapid and accurate fix any time he brought his N97 near a large piece of metal (small plate or hotel balcony handrail).

Please give us some more details about how to fix these problems!

took my old n97 back got one with v11 preinstalled and the gps works great

no lag , no disconnections just pure gps how it should be

iam much happyier with my n97 now

id take it back if youre having problems ive seen a few n97s now with perfect gps so ot every gps has to be ''modded'' like this

i think there is a bad batch

why does mine work perfect and some of yours keeps dropping signal?? i say because the gps hasnt been fited properley in some of them it happend with the n85 when that 1st came out and it seems to be happending again

i wouldnt take my n97 apart and invalidate the warranty when you could take it back and just get one that works 😊

and people whos gps was working but now isnt , if it wasnt fited great and youve knocked your handset then it could cause it to stop working

seems weird how mine works perfect and some people doesnt , by the way ive had a faulty one so its easy for me to compare a working n97 gps and a non working n97 gps

this is what i tought last week, mine worked really good for a week then all of a sudden started playing up. so give it a bit of time see what happens.

hope you got a working version of this expensive rubbish. all the best.

thanks sam me too mate 😊

That guy was lucky to get accuracy of 150ft in the house. Im lucky to get 500ft accuracy out doors. Ok, we have some cloud cover, but still!

My GPS was working very fast and accurately with the Maps 2.0 as-delivered with V10 firmware.

After the V11 firmware and Maps 3.0, it was lousy--hardly could get a fix and was w-a-y off positionally (telling you to turn AFTER you had passed the turn!).

Maps 3.1 is only slightly better positionally, but it is still OFF by about 1-2 houses from street address to actual location and the GPS fix jumps about 15-20 meters.

I don't think it is the hardware since the original installation worked so well.

I think it is software/timing.

stupid question but how did you go about getting a replacement? Did you get yours initially from nokia directly?

My gps was working perfectly and then last time i used it it was far from perfect, so might go for the replacement option. Sometimes i get so pissed off, this next firmware upgrade better be good.

Has anyone else had this feeling? When you're showing someone what the phone can do and in your mind you're thinking "please don't fuck up or freeze or crash", i hate that feeling

Anybody had luck with this? I bought my N97 second hand, (though it was only a week old) so i guess i have no power to take it to a Nokia care point and have the lens replaced and the GPS replaced?

They're my only 2 quabbles with this phone and the GPS is embarrassing, I was trying to give directions to a restaurant yesterday and it wouldnt lock on even in the car, no high buildings near or anything, would only give me to within 1700m which means i kept popping up all over the map, when i'm at home in Norwich i get within 90m thanks to the A-GPS..but i rarely get a lock in the time i'm using the maps, poor!

Obviously (as you were not the ORIGINAL purchaser) you won't be able to take it back to the vendor, but I would of thought you COULD take it to a Nokia Care Point, without question.

Nokia handsets' normally have a 24 month warranty, and the GPS issue is a DEFINATE (unquestionable) problem. The lens issue maybe "questionable".

With my previous Nokias', before the days we could update software ourselves, I have always taken to a "while you wait" care point, and they have NEVER questioned, nor asked for a sales receipt.

Try it, and see what they say.

Good luck

Cheers

Does the firmware update solve the GPS problem? I sent my unit in for repair hours before the firmware was released...

I'm really at a loss as to why nokia haven't offically said anything about this, or have they?

I'm amazed, and disappointed that Nokia have failed to own up, or fix this issue. I've spent 40 quid on sorting out a tomtom instead - I'd have loved to use my phone, but I can't. Now it's too late to return it to vodafone - I feel like I've been betrayed by a company who have had my loyalty for 10 years.

Pookey,

If it isn't working as advertised, and marketed, then it's "not fit for the purpose", under the Sale of Goods Act.

Speak with Vodagroan, and if no joy there, then speak with your local Trading Standards office

Good luck

PS/

More here....

Thanks for the link to the nokia forums. In some ways it's good to know I'm not the only one with an issue, in other ways it's just even more annoying knowing there's so many people out there with the same problem, but it's still being ignored.

The thing is.. there's no other phone I want, so complaining to voda won't really help - I just want my poor liil n97 to work. *sigh*

Pookey,,
If it's any consolation, I am on my THIRD N97 from Vodagroan.

Units 1 and 2, both had s/w v10 on board, to which I upgraded to v11 when it was released. Maps/GPS was cr*p, being 600 FOOT (200 yards) "out of true" when navigating. Speed indicator (bottom left) would go from actual speed to zero, then back again, and then zero, then back again ad infinitum. GPS "image" would be lost, and then acquired, and then lost again. Absolutely NO GOOD for navigation.

Spoke with Nokia, and the "muppets" advised this "was due to the satellites being owned by the US Government, so they (Nokia) can do nothing about the accuracy"!!!! Errrr Heeelllllooooo!!!! (Yes, it was a STUPID comment)

Anyway. My THIRD unit from Vodafone had v11 already on board, along with Maps2.

It works PERFECT, as a SatNav should. Comparable with my TomTom.

So, yes the N97 is a great phone (pocket computer) WHEN THINGS ARE AS THEY SHOULD BE!

Get Vodafone to REPLACE it, until such times as you have a unit that WORKS AS IT SHOULD.

Good luck

Cheers

I wrote to them about the GPS and they made a full and frank denial of there being any problems with the phone.

They also said that my case was 'exceptional' since they hadn't heard of any other problems - apparently despite their own discussion forum being full of complaints.

Helpfully, they also said that all their phones worked just fine. Which is nice for them. Unbelievable.

What a load of "cr*p" you have been given.

Perhaps they're hoping the problem will go away, as they seem TOTALLY uninterested. 😞

took mine to a nokia repair centre today and the guy said "N97 GPS problem is very common" and he had many people bringing their phone for repair because of gps problem.

i guess nokia dont keep track of faults reported to their repair centres? im sure they do but they dont want to admit it.

oh and they guy said he can flash the firmware it might make a difference, so i said yes, came back after an hour, got the phone and he done nothing to it, all my contacts there, time and date not changed and all programs installed :icon13: stupid idiot 😡

if the gps dosent work take it back

iam with kevinxon this i have one that works perfect it is easily as good as my old n82 and n96 ive ran tests etc

the old n97 i had dropped signal all the time it was rubbish , tookit back 3 weeks later got one shipped with v11 much much better

gps is great even with nokia maps 3.01 😊

also the mods on the voda eforum are very helpfull and can help arrange returns or even get you speaking to customer relations which are very helpfull indeed

head over to the voda eforum and see what the mods are saying i found them very helpfull and understanding just be nice , dont go shouting at them and telling them you want the world on a plate wrapped in a bow tie and chat to them like you would anyone else 😊

the more people that return to vodafone because of gps the more they will moan to nokia vodafone are allready on the case about the camera cover and are in discussion with nokia about it

(sorry for my english)

We have the same problem with GPS in France.

I have noticed this strange thing :

Go in a cave, a place you can't receive sat signal
Put your N97 in No connection mode
Run "Place" application (Lieu in french), then DATA GPS (Donnes GPS) then something like "Satellite state" (Etat du satellite) to see the sat rectangles.
And strange !!! you can see some rectangles but it's impossible to receive sat data in a cave or a place like that.
Remove the SIM in the phone and do the same test : then there is no rectangle as you can't receive sat signal.
Why the phone doesn't behave the same in no connection mode with or without a SIM ?
Does the same try to (mis)use AGPS in no connection mode when a SIM is in ?
Strange is not it ?

Thanks for reading and for your comments.

some uk links stating consumer rights they are worth reading so you know youre rights maybe even print them off and take them with your phone to the supplier you got it from , you bought it from them not the manufacturer , anyways read the links some good info in there

Thing is I got mine off 3 UK. when I call them about faulty handset they ask me to send it for repairs, ive done this before, after sending the handset for repairs a couple of times they replace it with a refurbished handset.

nokia repair centre says they need to send it to finland for two weeks, and there is no gaurantee it will be fixed i.e. usable like my N95

so for now i use my 2 years old 15 no brand bluetooth GPS off ebay to do the task of this useless 500 rubbish. Fortunalty I got it on 12month contract, once it’s finished I will never buy a nokia again.
