Lost forum data

Due to a security breach we have lost about 24 hours of forum posts. I apologise for the inconvenience.

I am looking into the details of the security breach.

I'm afraid it is unlikely we'll be able to restore the posts from this period.

Thought you might appreciate an update in this thread:

Last night a message was posted to an existing new story on the front page announcing that the site had been hacked and that the databases had been delted / user information copied. There was some additional damage to the forum database.

Obviously this is rather embarrassing, but security breaches seem to be fact of life. There's no real excusing this though, and I want to apologise to AAS members and visitors both for the lost information (forum posts) and inconvenience.

I'm still investigating this, but the server logs do suggest that despite the message the user database was not copied / downloaded.

Obviously the sensitive information in the user database is email addresses (there's not really anything else of value that isn't already public on the site (i.e username, profile info etc.). Passwords are hashed in the member database so there's no value in those.

Any questions please let me know and I'll do my best to answer them.

It happens. The important thing is that you spotted it and have dealt with it. Keep up the good work 😊
