I am after a case for holding my N97 on my belt, have seen a few on ebay, but wanted to get some opinions from others.
Is there any point in buying a case for 10-20 when I can get a case for 3.50 (or possibly less)
Any advice/opinions welcome.

In my experiences with ebay you get what you pay for. If you buy a cheap case, you'll get a cheap case. It's stating the obvious I know but I've always gone for branded cases for all of my past phones as they tend to be better put together than cheap alternatives.
But the thing with cases is that they are marked up so high that eBay gets you close to the wholesale cost but I am also willing to buy a branded case for this phone because of where the ports are at but I can't find any.
case for about 10 Pounds (converts in my head).
I always use a case and with the N97 being roughly as much as my N95 when it first came out I bought the case before I got the phone.
If you use a case almost certainly you will have a pristine phone even after a couple of years use. The case may look a little worn but at a fraction of the cost of the phone its money well spent. Your phone's eventual resale value of will be higher too.
I use just a simple black leather case (no name brand) has all the holes in all the right places .. I also keep the cleaning cloth in the case .. covering the screen when the case is closed.

I had a crystal case I bought off amazon. I kinda liked it but one of the tiny clips that hold it in place snapped off so it had to go.

I had a pouchy thing too, bt it was a terrible fit. My wife now keeps her iphone in it.

I'm waiting for a rubberised hard case to see if it fairs any better...

Also, bought a cheap screen protector from amazon
http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0029ALEWM/ref=ox_ya_oh_product but I'm rubbish at putting them on. But I only had it whilst waiting for the martin fields one I got from mobilefun. Which was a bit easier to put on.

I got the 3rd one on your list off ebay. Had it for a week, nice fit. Need to file the sreeen hole to make it bigger though as it'll interfere with the touch screen.
Cheers for that...
So, is everbody else running around with naked N97s or what?
And is nakedN97s.com regsitered?
All this and many other questions probably won't be answered on tonights News at 10...
😉
I have the screen protector that came wit the phone originally but other than that.... nope. no case.
Never generally do with my phones!
It would be better if Nokia went back down the express on cover route. Sure they add bulk to the phone but they could most likly be made a lot thinner now and when they used to be mainstream you never used to worry about cosmetic damage because it could all be sorted with a new housing.
My N97 is "naked".
For years I used belt clips for my various phones and would go through about two a year as they tended to catch on things.
Since most iPhone users carry theirs in their pockets, I'm experiementing with that concept...though it means I have to carry my pen knife in my other pants pocket and I have to be vigilant with what I put in the pocket with the N97 (no keys!).
I don't use a screen protector (I experimented with those on my Nokia N800s and don't really like them) and I have one small "ding" in my display that I think was caused by an inadvertent contact with a diamond on my class ring.
The ding is in an unobtrusive location so I don't worry about it.
I have been looking closely though at the chrome trim on my white N97. I am beginning to see some fine scratches along the edge and wonder when we might start seeing below the chrome (plating or paint?).
I generally keep my phones naked, as I always carry them in a trouser pocket, with no oterh tiem in there, so there nothing to scrtach them. I'm not a fan of cases, as they bulk up the phone, so you end up with an even larger lump in your trousers ( is that an N97 in your pocket or are you just pleased to see me... )
But, I tried this tactic with the N95 and after a year of diligent use ( with screen protector ) I cracked the screen on the phone ( I still think it was my wife's fault, but that another story ) . SO then expereimented with N95 cases, and found the thinnest and slimmest I could, a cheap one, but it meant that the corners of teh case wore out quickly leaving sharp scratchy corenrs that would lacerate my upper thighs.
In the end, went back to having a naked phone.
I would still like a case for the N97, but again, don't want anything too bulky, and don't want a belt clip. Sorry, no offence intended, but I always think the belt clip cases look a bit nerdy. Bit like sandals and socks. Novelty ties. You get the picture.
Trawled round the mobile phone shops last weekend here in Jeddah, and not one single shop sells cases for the N97, and couldn't find a screen protector either. Looks like I'll have to wait til I'm back in Blighty.
In terms of the chrome trim, it reminds me a little of the chrome trim around the 6680. Used that phone for well over a year ( still have it too ) , and taht chrome trim was a bit delicate, and scratched up a little too easy, but again, the phone still looks in tip top shape ( still use it now and again as it has Tom Tom installed ! )
My N97 is naked. And it loves it.
I don't like cases, it'd be like putting clothes on Jessica Alba, just wrong!
Although, i've got to admit, i didn't even notice the screen protector for the first 4 days i had the phone till i thought i'd scratched the screen. I thought the little silver triangle was part of the design! So quite happily i've ordered some from eBay, will see if they're as good.
I've got a few little marks round the edge, but only if you look closely, think i might need to buy some compressed air to clean the dust out of the small fiddly bits!
I also use my phone 'commando', but I always have a screen protector and generally the best one that I can get. For me it's a business tool and as such I'm only really interested in long term usability. That means no bulking it up so that I can carry it in my trouser pocket, and I have an intense dislike of belt pouches, but each to their own of course. I don't really care too much if it still looks nice in 6 months time so if it ends up scratched and tired then that's fine as long as it's still working.

A naked phone?? No Thanks. 18 months on, and my N82 still looks like new, as I always had that fully clothed too 😊
Cheers
I got that same shell cover, the 4 one off ebay. Does it's job, looks ok and provides good protection. Screen protector fitted too.
Warning to all about the rubberised shell -
1) it is basically the same as the transparent case - but with a coating of rubber on it. This is not bad, but it is held to the phone still by very flimsy plastic clips that is extremely hard to get out without breaking them (eg. when your phone locks up - which happens very frequently on N97's). You can do it with a small flat head screw driver, but it will wear down the plastic tabs and it will only be a matter of time before they break off and it will not stick to your phone anymore.
2) The top part where it wraps around the screen interferes with the touch screen and causes unresponsiveness and calibration problems after a while. I mistakenly took this to be a software issue, hard reset my phone - only to find out that after the reset, it still had various touch screen issues. Removing the top lid instantly gave the touch screen back again. (and having to spend half a day reinstalling my apps!)
I am now using the original Nokia case that it came with (for the APAC region).. case is too tight but at least my touch screen works properly. going to try a sideways slip in belt type one from ebay instead.
I only ever used a case for my 8800 Sirrocco, but got bored of always having to take it out, and the phone felt so much better in the hand and pocket without the case.
Stopped using cases since, even with my 8800 Arte (and that phone comes with a case) and its still in mint condition with no scratches.
I'm very careful with my phones, and to be honest, the N97 is clunky enough without having to add more to it.
