A little reminder about backing up

10 replies · 2,526 views · Started 16 July 2009

As we've already mentioned, All About Symbian recently had to be restored, after being hacked, from an overnight backup. While we lost some forum postings, a regular backup strategy meant that we didn't have to roll back too far to get to a working state. What would happen if something catastrophic befell a Symbian phone rather than a Symbian web site?

Read on in the full article.

worth pointing out that if your phone starts playing up, you reset it and then restore your settings- you might find you actually restore the setting that was causing problems with your device.
Restore your contacts and calendar, but I tend to download and set up everything else afresh.

good advice on backups, if only we could sort out an easy sync between ovi & google now.
btw ewan, did you mean to share your phone numbers with everyone as they are showing up on the devices list in the first image?

You should also know where all your serial numbers and registration codes are in case you need to re-enter them.

If you're looking for a reliable Sync service that does backup as well, try out our rseven.com. It works well with multiple phones (S60 and Windows Mobile), just make sure to use common fields if you're planning to go across platform.

Well, while we're on the subject, how about raising the "someone was going to mention it sooner rather than later" question:

Please, please, Nokia, will you sort out support for complete device backup on the Mac? I don't really care how it's done - perhaps they could bolt on backup features to Nokia Multimedia Transfer (which I use regularly and think it's a great package); alternatively, port PC/Ovi Suite to the Mac (have heard rumours Nokia are working on something like this, thanks to their acquisition of Trolltech/the Qt framework).

However they get around to Mac backup support, I just hope they do, as there's currently no easy way I know of to do complete incremental backups from my N95 to my Mac. I already do over-the-air sync to Ovi (contacts, calendar, notes) and Google (calendar, via GooSync), but it would do wonders for my peace-of-mind if I knew I could restore my N95 completely if I needed to.

I've found memotoo to be a reliable service so far. I've had some minor issues with Ovi, but it's not too bad for a free service. However, it works only with Nokia handsets. With Memotoo, which uses SyncML, I can share the same data across handsets and even desktop clients.

A hosted Exchange account is another good (or perhaps better?) alternative, particularly if push email and automatic sync are also desired.

With the exception of new photos taken with the phone and maybe a note, everything has a backup - contacts and calendar are sync'd OTA, docs, music etc. are copied across from the computer using PC suite etc. so the bigger question for me is not about data being irreplaceable but falling into the wrong hands. I don't carry critically sensitive data anyway but I don't really want my contacts to be spammed, nor do I wish to share details about when I'm going to be at the airport.

I was just wondering about Wavesecure which claims to be able to remotely lock your phone and scrub data in the event of loss or theft. It also seems to do backup, and possibly locate the phone. I didn't try it yet because it's a paid app that to be honest I don't really need yet. Perhaps if I heard some rave review about it working brilliantly, I might get interested!

I mostly use the Content Copier but I often experience that it fails to backup some things and it is one thing that if often fails but the biggest problem is that it is easy to miss the fact that it has failed. Recently I had some problems with my 5800 and I wanted to do a hard reset, so I backed everything up and I then did the hard reset and it was nor before I did a restore I realized that it had not backed up my calendar!!! Quite frustrating. Luckily I sync with my outlook at work otherwise I would have lost a lot.

I recently wanted to try out OVI sync but when I ask it to send me the settings I just never received anything. I have even tried that in phone backup fails. Furthermore I would like to have the possibility to restore a finer selection than just 'settings'. I would be nice to get just bookmarks, access point setup and podcasts but no programs.

Needles to say I am not impressed by the backup possibilities.

While on the topic of the database hack,

Quick Question,

The hacker defaced the page to say "hey you got completely hacked, and all databases are dumped."

(I took a screenshot)

Does this mean someone out there has access to all our usernames and passwords?

Thanks,
Noah

According to Rafe, here, "Passwords are hashed in the member database so there's no value in those", usernames are already public but email addresses, well I guess we're in store for some special invitations and unbelievable offers.
