Ive had many Nokias over the years. As a rule I find the waiting for firmware upgrades and fiddling around part of the fun, hence I keep buying new ones.

Then, the day before yesterday, I actually needed it to do something useful. I was going on holiday and I needed it to take me to the airport. It failed absolutely. If it hadnt been for my girlfriend and her map wed still be subject to the British weather now. Route recalculation... Route recalculation... GPS signal lost... regained... lost... regained. To be honest, considering all Ive said about her cheapie Vodafone own band phone this was an embarassing farce. Seriously, even when wed arrived at the airport it was showing as in the middle of a field but with nearly full GPS lock.

Her phone delivered text messages whilst roaming yesterday - my N97 waited until today to dump the lot on me (were on the same network). Again, her cheap phone did better.

There are other things I wont bore you with but to be honest Ive lost confidence in this phone now and the new problem of the new Maps 3.1 (and memory app) refusing to install is just taking the p***.

I think Nokia may have just about managed to push me in the direction of the Apple Store, and open the door for me.

With some of my older Nokias the most recent being the 9300, I found that when my phone was around, it tended to blank other people's phones as it was more powerful.

This really irritated my wife, so I always had to make sure that I put my phone away from where it would cause her any grief.

So far I've had very good performance from my N97 NAM (excepting a few lousy programs that I've downloaded to review and post about to keep others from having to make the same mistakes!).

There phone has so much potential but its just waiting, waiting and waiting. It's sad because the phone is dead sexy but the amount of bugs on this phone is just so ridiculous I hope they are working around the clock the fix them.

I've found the maps to be on the whole pretty good.

I've used them to navigate from bristol to peterborough and back again.

I've used them to walk me to the nokia care in peterborough (where they told me they'll replace the lens glass when the nokia care person is back in)

And I did get the update.

It does seem that quality does vary though...

here the other day, I had to drive from my vacation house back to my parents house. I wanted to compare the maps against my tomtom 930 for this two and a half hour drive. The only difference between my n97 and the tomtom was the 30 min. difference in the estimated travel time, other than that it was spot on. Also, there wasn't any problems with my gps-reception while driving, even if the phone was somewhat hidden down in the car, since I don't have a mounting kit to it. I passed several tunnels while driving, and the time it used to connect to a gps-signal again was equal to the tomtom. Also, my phone was connected to the tomtom with bluetooth for the handsfree-option, the fm-transmitter and music player was on, transmitting music to my car stereo. And, I both received and sent messages while doing all this.
