Stagnant Progress

Okay, so it's like this...

...I'm reading a lot about this that and the other joining forces with the Symbian Foundation, but what does that actually mean to the end user? I certainly don't see any progress being made.

I see the Ovi Store still looking like a flea market (still recommending the Star Trek stuff as new, really?) and not a lot happening on the N97's firmware front.

I was ranting last week about how my girlfriend's utterly rubbish 30 phone did better than my N97 when it mattered but even though she's not that into phones she couldn't help but have a play with Nokia's flagship device as it was on our bedside table.

She's decided she wants a new phone now and poor she isn't. She won't be going for the N97 though as, having seen it in action, she's searching high and low for a fully unlocked iPhone 3GS. I'd image she won't see a lot of change out of 700 for this but she doesn't care because, you see, she had a go with her brother's iPhone and it was 'great' - unlike the N97 which is 'rubbish' and 'doesn't have a pretty moving about menu.'

So, Nokia's newest, most powerful phone, can actually manage to put potential buyers off by just using it.

Nokia shouldn't be releasing firmware for this phone on their usual 3 month cycle. It needs to work and it needs to work now.

I'd quite agree, i'm happy to see some progress on the apps, things like shazam and fring and a few games make it a bit better. The Apple App store did have to wait a while to get going to.

Nokia is losing because their phone isn't as intuitive to use right off the bat, i've had Nokias for the past 9 years so I know where the different options are, what to look for. However, pick up an iPhone and it's solid and easy to get going. Something simple like a capacative touchscreen and transition themes for the menu would have helped.

That being said, i love all the features in this phone, since i unbranded and upgraded to v11 a week ago, the phone hasn't crashed once, not once!

A few firmware updates and then we'll be good till the N98 or something comes out, or the Xseries.

in the news a few days ago, didn't they annouce that there is going to be a new Symbian App store, called Horizon, which will launch in October. Its supposed to rival "the" App store

here's hoping its infinitely better than the OVI store, which currently is embarrassing.....

What they gonna put in this new store? The same old Tat that's in Ovi?

I did download and pay for that crazy golf game yesterday. Not bad for 1.50.

thats the real question, is it just going to be OVI with a different name.....

it sounds like it has to be more, if they want to compete with Apple, so i'm guessing it will be a massive improvement, lets face it, if you've got from now until Oct to produce a App store, you'd have to try hard to make it worse than OVI currently is

I'm inclined to agree with you. Over the past few days I've had what can best be described as "post call lock-ups".

You answer a phone call with the phone locked by sliding right on the green answer arrow.

When your call is finished you have no touch screen, keyboard or button response whatsoever!! You can't end the call--nothing works except repeative presses on the power button or removing the battery!

So far out of about 60 calls I've experienced this post-call-lock-up (PCLU) twice.

On the Nokia Discussions Forum, there are a number of other users who have reported this. Most find that the workaround is to always unlock the touchscreen before answering the call.

I'm going to continue to collect observations and data to see if I can determine just what is causing the PCLUs.

Thanks for the tip...I'll try and be sure that I'm not holding the phone in such a way as to obscure the proximity sensor and see if that makes a difference.

I've already disable the rotation sensors as I have become frustrated with picking a ringing phone up off of a table and having to wait for the screen update to stabilize before I can answer the call.

If anything I would call the rotation sensor too sensitive ("hair trigger"😉.

Using a term from button/keyboard design I would say that it needs "debouncing" added to the circuitry or software.

dear i m facing same problem while receiving the call. i dont know why nokia is not giving any answer regarding this issue.
