Fring (should have come pre-installed in your device, if not, go to www.fring.com) is compatible with the Messenger chat service. Nimbuzz (www.nimbuzz.com) does the same thing, and it shows avatars. You can exchange files over MSN with both apps. Also, check eBuddy (www.ebuddy.com).
They are all free.
