Scandanavian keyboard with UK version firmware...

19 replies · 4,684 views · Started 06 March 2003

Apperently they don't mix too well :-? so bemoans my mate.
He has a 9210 (not the i), which had Finnish language firmare. His IT dept manged to update it with English, however, there was option for the Scandanavian keyboard (it's got 's 's & other bizzare letters on ! 😉 ), it can get a bit confusing.
The firmware is 4.13(6) if that helps.
Any ideas as to what he should do to get the properkeyboard support (other than change his company's IT dept...)

Are you saying that he lost the scandinavian letters (, etc)? And that he needs the keybsu? Or that he wants to get rid of the 's and 's?

Has he tried the nokia support site?

I see no reason why he shouldn't be able to get the appropriate firmware. I've got an English language 9210 (4.13) with a Finnish keyboard. Mine came out of the box that way, so clearly Nokia must have a suitable version of the firmware somewhere...

Mine too, I have the 9210i (SW ver 5.54(5)) with Scandinavian keyboatd & English language firmware & the first time I turned it on, it asked me to select wether I wanted to use the Finnish layout (with & ) or Danish ( or ). No trauma, but obviously he hasn't been so lucky...

Can someone actually tell me how to identify the firmware versions from it's number ?
i.e. my 9210i has 5.54(5), and my mate's 9210 has 4.13(6).
What identifies the language version ?
What identifies the HW supported, i.e. UK or Scandanavian keyboard ?

The problem's sort of mute now, as my mate discovered Communicators don't bounce...
Apparently, it fell out of his jacket pocket & manged to find an ice free bit of pavement to crack on.
He's been demoted to a 6110 😮

He has all my sympathies. I've managed to smash two Communicators so far. My original 9110, & my 9210. Both times, I took a tumble on a pavement & smashed the interior screen. The phones still worked OK, though: it was just the interior LCDs that cracked. Got the 9210 screen replaced. It wasn't cheap, but it was still a lot cheaper than a new smartphone or PDA...

Too bad his communicator was destroyed.. 😞

Anyway, you can have English language with or without scandinavian keys support (has to be changed by Nokia service center) and if you don't have scandinavian keyboard or support for the letters you can have a third party program to do the job (Remapper/Interkey). Works OK.

Yeah, he doesn't seem to lucky with phones.
Though I can't comment, my 20 month old daughter is always playing with mine. It's getting stratches on the cover, the red IR perspex has a big chip out of it & I'm always finding new or altered entries in the Contacts.
Just who is "nodfhvnvvnvnvv" anyway ?

As for the keyboard support. I know the green Chr key brings up the extra charcters, but what I would prefer is an Alt key, because the ones I use the most (i.e. , , etc) I know off by heart & can type quiker than browsing the additional character lists.

As others have noted there are two different English software versions; with or without scandinavian keyboard support.

If you want to change it without changing the software version there are some 3rd party programs which do the job.

If you want to change how some keys function you could take a look at the program called Remapper; have you tried that?

To be honest, I don't intend to fiddle around too much with the thing, as it's not my phone - it's supplied by work, though I can use it for personal calls aswell (& they pay the bills 😃 )

It's back !
My mate got his 9210 back & still has to hit the key to get a "."
He says he's got used to it, as every time it goes back to the servicepoint, it takes about two weeks before he sees it again.
So, is there anyway to update/replece the firmware oneself ? and...
How would I we find out what is the correct version to support his phone ?

I would like to mix with a few of those Scandinavian women though! They will be 100% compatiable with english me! 😉 😉 😃

Because this is not the waffle, I will not comment on 4u2nv 😉

There are apps that will change the keyboard / localization to suit another language
like http://nokia-9210-software.epocware.com/InterKey.html
and http://www.psiloc.com/nokia/eng/crystal/latin.html but they all cost money. Trial is free though. I presume you can get these through Handango.

Firmware should perhaps not be tampered with...

I won't comment either in case my (Finnish) wife has something to say... 😮

Thanks for the links, I'll forward them onto him.
Though personally I can't understand what the problem is, for his service centre - if they're Nokia 'approved' then they ought to have sorted this from the start !

Mod A > English language with ENQWERTY keyboard
Mod S > Finnish language with SCAND keyboard (&)
Mod X > English language with SCAND keyboard (&)

(you can read the mod version from imei sticker)

He has now
Mod X with Mod A language pack or
Mod S with Mod A language pack

There has been some mistake in service centre.. (yeah, that happens in every service i think 😉) If he has originally Mod S and he likes to use it in english, then they should put X language pack to it in service.

Yep, i was probably late and the problem was solved allready... but just to make it clear 😊

Regards,
Jep
