Are Nokia upto Microsoft antics?

Well, not exactly the same, but I am quite disappointed with Nokia about some of the deals they have done with the pre-install 3rd Party developers to restrict the way that I want to use my N97.

Hardwiring applications such as Quickoffice and Boingo as the default application for certain OS type functions, which then require an additional purchase is just not acceptable.

This is especially true when you consider that there is not a version of Quickoffice for the N97 that supports Office 2007. Office Suite does, but the S60 OS is hardwired to use Quickoffice as the default application for Office documents. Yes I can use the built in file manager from Office Suite to navigate to the file I want to open, but this is not the same.

The way I see it, andything hardwired in the OS should be provided as PART of the OS, not as a buy later trial which if I choose to buy an alternative product will not allow me to set the default.

Very much reminds me of the trouble Microsoft got in with virtually every government over their anti-competitve behaviour relating to Internet Explorer.

MS have a long history of using their dominent position to push certain products over others from competitors, and it is worrying that in recent times Nokia have started to do the same with their preferred 3rd Party partners.

Simple question to find out if Nokia has done a deal to unfairly push Quickoffice. Can I totally uninstall Quickoffice and use Office Suite as my default Office application on the N97?

If the answer is no, because the N97 has been hardwired as the default Office application and I can not change this then that stiffles competition.

I havent tried to open any .doc/xls etc but if what you say is right about the default viewer being Open Office even when another office app is installed then that is wrong and even greater concern than anything MS have done with regard to including a fully functional media player or browser in the operating system.

just a quick edit this is IMO 😊

ohhh....i thought you meant push out bad software and let your users find the bugs and then fix it. Sorry, thought you meant that 😉

Applications should register extensions and then you can select which app you want to open them with.

Top tip, tiptop, thanks!

I would imaging this is to do with how apps register and install themselves.

Google Maps register's several extensions on mine so I would assume that if I installed another PDF app that correctly registered itself it would give me the option to open PDFs in it.

Thanks for the tip, but unfortaunately I dont see where any extentions have been registered on the menu options you gave. This seems to just set the behaviour of the standard built in applications rather than offering the choice of default application for a particular file type.

Can you expand a little?
