Contacts synchronization problem

I got an N97 from Vodafone a few days ago - replaced my ecxcellent n95. I tried to sync with my Outlook 97 on my PC to get all my contacts onto the phone. The N95 had never had a problem syncing with Outlook, but this one failed. I tried the alternative of using the switch program between the n95 and n97, but it also failed.

I have done a hard reset and have the latest firmware on the phone and the latest version of PC Suite.

The error in the log file of PC Suite is "PC Sync was unable to insert the following entry to the mobile phone" - there is one of these for all 800 and odd contacts.

Has anyone else seen this problem? Any ideas on how to fix it?

When connected to PC Suite, via USB, try clicking on Help in PC Suite and selecting "Reinstall PC Suite Support".

Thanks for the suggestion. I just tried it and got the response that it was already up to date. My impression is that the contacts database on the n97 is locked in some way - I can add contacts by hand on the phone, but it will not allow an external device to do it. Evidence is;

1. I tried syncing notes and this works fine in both directions.
2. Switch (the transfer program to sync Nokia phones) will not sync contacts either

A search of the web suggest one or two people have had this problem before, but I couldnt find a solution.

Could Vodafone have done something to the firmware that causes a problem?

Is there any way of resetting the contacts database if it gets corrupted?

I have solved the problem - not very nice or elegant, but did a hard reset and now I can sync fine. Only problem was that backup would not work, so lost all my config and had to start again. Something odd must happened to the phone, but now I know - you backup as soon as you have your config setup and hard reset and restore is probably the first step in troubleshooting.

I think there's a bug in the contacts API somewhere - I was working on a contacts widget and there's something that causes it to crash when simply retrieving a list of contacts. May be related...
