New to Symbian...some questions...

1. First of all - how do you create shortcuts to go on home screen? I want a shortcut for custom application - Garmin Mobile XT.

2. Is there a better MP3 player than default one for free? What about AVI/MPG player?

3. How do I adjust N97 camera shutter speed? I end up having blurry images because the shutter speed they set requires you to hold camera 100% still!

4. Any must-have applications? Any good sites to look for freeware and paid but good apps?

5. Can I somehow make N97 use USB connection to browse the internet through my PC?

6. Is it OK to uninstall default apps? Some, like API Bridges, sound like system files that have dependencies... should I just leave default apps alone for best stability? I don't have problems with the unit or any apps for now.

7. What about games? Does N97 have N-Gage built-in or is it emulating N-Gage? Any good sites to look for N97-compatible games, reviews, and such?

1 - From the home screen, press options, and choose edit content. From tehre you can tap on any of the widgets to remove them, or to add content, so from there you can add a shortcut bar , or two if you want to.

All shortcut bars allow for up to four applications, so you should be able to get a shortcut to Garmin. ( Which version of Garmin have you got BTW ? Can't get mine to work properly )

2 - Probably is, but haven't really looked for one, happy with the one that came with the phone.

3 - No idea, sorry.

4 - Check out Dave's N97 Freeware site

5 - Have you tried Joikuspot? Turns your phone into a wifi hotspot and you can then wirelessly connect your laptop to the phone and surf away.

6 - Not sure, so won't attempt this question.

7 - There is an NGage update now for the phone, so go to Applications, Software Update, choose refresh and N Gage should show up on the list, where you can download it over the air. Once this is done, you can then connect to the NGAge site and buy games / downlaod demo's.

Good Luck.

See my sig for link 😉

As far as shutter speed goes, try "Sports Mode". Failing that, if you whack the ISo level upto high that might help too...

Not seen any kind of direct access to shutter speed though

Thanks!

For #5 - I meant the other way around. I want to browse net with N97 while its hooked to PC thorugh USB. I want it to use existing PC network connection.

First: I'm not owner of a N97 - still thinking about purchasig one and trying to find out if it would match my needs. For earlier N models there was a feature that allows using the PC's internet connection to connect the phone, called ip passthrough by Nokia (you may google for that item). I asked Nokia support, and they answered, that ip passthrough is not :frown: yet supported for n97, but they thank me for the suggestion. Unbelievable that they forgot to include this important feature 🙄. A reason for me to wait for an update or the n98 (?).

2. I have the following programs installed:

Powermp3
Folderplay
Musiclauncher

The last two are free and work fine. They all allow you to browse to a folder on your disk or memory card and play music from there, instead of using playlists or sorting by album/artist.

Seems abit pointless doing that.

Why use a screen with 640x360 when it's plugged into a pc where you could browse with anything upto 1920x1200 and maybe above?

Browsing on your phone while not directly connected to a pc, WiFi is your best option.
