Roll Your Own Widgets - A post begging to be sticky...

4 replies · 12,271 views · Started 28 July 2009

Obviously with this new fangled widget craze sweeping the internet (ish) we'll all want to be creating our own widgets.

But Nokia are not very good at putting all the useful things in one place (naughty Nokia!) so we should use this thread to tell each other about all the great things we've discovered...

Without further ado: -

There's Nokias WRT intro page at http://www.forum.nokia.com/Technology_Topics/Web_Technologies/Web_Runtime/

The WRT WIKI is at http://wiki.forum.nokia.com/index.php/Category:Web_Runtime_(WRT)

And the full documentation is at the Forum Nokia library - http://library.forum.nokia.com/index.jsp?topic=/Web_Developers_Library/GUID-57DAF2D2-28DF-45F4-B901-05F4B2CFF109.html

A good working knowledge of HTML and JavaScript will help too...

If you download the S60 5th Edition SDK you get a relatively easy to use test environment. Some of the example widgets mentioned on Forum Nokia are included.

Check out the STEW example on Forum Nokia for an example of how to do a homescreen widget.

Also, a note regarding AJAX requests if you're using Aptana Studio for widget development - The security model of embedded Firefox it uses for previews doesn't allow cross domain xmlHTTP requests, so AJAX will not work in the preview...

Hi all,

Apart from here (of course!), can anyone point out a good place to discuss and request help using the Nokia development tools amongst programmers? Was thinking that someone here would have a good idea of where a good place to hang out is?

Cheers.

Hi Dave, I asked about avoiding vruses and got this in a reply:

"... 2. Avoid "freeware" programs from websites that offer games, etc unless you are absolutely sure that the program is not malware or spyware. ..."

it's here: http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/forum//forum/thread/98382/#post481292#post481292 (hopefully!)

I wrote asking how can you tell !! Your site for instance has free games and I'm "sure" all is fine but how could anyone tell who doesn't know you for real ??

Any comments greatly appreciated.
