DataViz updates RoadSyc 4 with touch optimisations

DataViz today announced the release of an updated version of RoadSync that improves the product's support for S60 5th Edition devices such as the Nokia N97 and 5800, and Samsung i8910. Version 4.004 of the Microsoft Exchange Client features a new 'touch toolbar' when viewing messages, allowing for easier email management. The release also improves the set up procedure with support for auto-discovery (Exchange 2007 only) of account details.

Good news, I've been enjoying Roadsync on my i8910, apparently the new update is a nice refresh (installing it now)...

Some of these screenshots highlight how bad the S60 touch UI and the email app implementations on it are. In the second s/shot I can see all of 6 emails on the screen. There's an icon for email - why is that necessary in an email program? You can then see about 10 characters of the senders name and 10 characters of the subject. That's almost useless! This isn't a problem that's exclusive to the Datasync product and Nokia Messaging isn't a big improvement.

Compare that to the iPhone (ducks). In the email application you can configure how much of the message it will preview in the list view from 0 to 5 lines. You also get considerably more of the subject and senders name, about 20 and 30 characters respectively. You can also choose a font size. Here's an example with preview turned off.

Email is still one of the key smartphone apps and IMHO Nokia is lagging way behind Apple, RIM and Android

Yes I know what you mean. I think the screen space could be used more effectively. It's not DataViz's fault as it a standard S60 list implementation. I don't really mind only seeing six emails, but the fact I don't see more of them is annoying. Reducing the size probably wont work because it wuold bes less finger friendly, but at least use two lines of text - plenty of room for it.

That said some of the extra stuff (icon you refer) to are useful. The top ones let you switch to other folders in messaging (SMS etc.). The bottom ones let you take immediate action on emails (reply, new email, delete).

One thing I haven't been able to figure out with RoadSync is looking up phone numbers in the Global Address List. I've looked around both on Dataviz's site and in the online documentation. Anyone have ideas?

Just tried it last night (I had bought a full license but havent used it as I went back to M4E since I swapped out my E71 to N97!).

Its definitely miles ahead of what it use to be and a very worthy upgrade (even from 4.002 to 4.004).

the only problem I have with it is it doesnt allow you to select "Internet" destination as your access point (which will automatically swap over to Home or work WIFI when detected rather than through 3G/HSDPA). You have to pick a specific access point which is rather annoying since M4E gave you the option to and worked really really well.

Other than that.. worth the upgrade and worth the license by purchasing it through OVI. Just wish Quickoffice wasnt as expensive!!

Had this a couple of days now, nice UI refresh, and the Google Sync is golden.

Unfortunately it's no good for me as a) we're still not migrated to Exchange 2007 so no HTML, b) I can't choose what Calendar to sync from in my mailbox as I keep a private and work calendar and I want my private one sync'd which is a sub-calendar (maybe this is an Exchange 2003 limitation too).

As for the comments re: the GUI being bad, I agree. The likes of Gravity and Profimail show that you don't have to conform to the nastiness of the standard GUI, so they could have put some effort in and done a far better job. I fear though that now that S60 is going to change, that developers will simply not bother until what comes out next.
