Hey everyone!

I'm James, I live in London, UK and I ordered my Nokia 5800 from eBay last week, and it should be arriving tomorrow, so I'm pretty excited about that. It's locked to T-Mobile, but I'll either just get a T-Mobile sim card or get it unlocked...

It's going to be my first Symbian phone. Normally I can't stand the Nokia OS interface but I'm making an exception this time because I fell in love with the 5800 as soon as I first used one.

I've been looking at various contracts for the past few months, was going to get a BB Storm at first, then a HTC Magic, then a BB Bold, then an iPhone 3GS up until last week when I concluded that 30 a month was a bit much to be spending on a phone seeing as I'm still in school (not exactly going to be needing 30 worth of credit every month). Then I started to look at cheaper PAYG phones and found the 5800 for 150 on eBay, so that's what's coming in the mail 😃.

I've been using a Nokia 6230i and a Sony Ericsson W550i on and off for the past couple of years and thought it was time to enter the smartphone market. I've bought an at&t Tilt 8925 (HTC TyTn II/HTC Kaiser) last summer in a right state. The case had pretty much fallen apart, it would only turn on some of the time, it seemed really buggy and was locked to at&t. So I cleaned up the case, glued a lot of it back on, flashed the original ROM, updated to WM6.1 then put a Dutty WM6.1 ROM on it, CID-unlocked it, put TouchFlo3D on it and it was working again. I used it a little, but not that much, until about a month ago when I was on work experience (working at GSK if anyone has heard of it) and was using it for that seeing as I could hook it up to the Exchange account they set up for me there and get e-mails from clients while at home or on lunch break. But two days into it, suddenly it said "No SIM Card entered, Emergency Calls only" (even though the SIM had been working for the past few days, and still works in my 6230i and W550i now), and it still seems to think there isn't a SIM card inside it even now (Virgin Mobile, 3, O2 and at&t, it's the same on all of them), so that's why I thought it was finally time for a new, working phone.

Well, that's about it so far. Sorry for the long post xD. Hope to speak to you all at one point or another while I'm here 😉.

You obviously know your way around a phone, but you might still find some useful information in our 5800 tutorial series: http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/features/item/Nokia_5800_XpressMusic-Tutorials_Tips__Hints.php

Thanks for the link 😉. And yeah, well I bought it off eBay in the US last summer for a great deal (ended up being 35 when they're about 100-200 on eBay out here 😃) and seeing as I got it at the end of the trip and first used it when I was back in the UK, I wasn't that inclined to try and search for another deal as good as that one and wait about 2 weeks for it to come in the mail, so I thought I may as well give it a shot 😊.

The 5800 just arrived in the post today xD. Stayed in all day with a keen ear to the door for the postman and at around 1ish it came, so I'm thrilled with that 😃. Just been playing with it for quite a bit, and even though I normally hate Symbian interfaces, it works quite well on the 5800. Just had to go into town today to get a Nokia headset (with the music-control-thing) and now I'm just getting around it. Got the Ovi store and Facebook working, so I'll just take a better look at same applications later.

But, question: Is the video playback normally good on it? Because I downloaded two old Nokia N-series adverts just to see what video playback was like on it and it seemed like it was only playing at around 10fps. Is this normal? Or was it just a problem with those particular videos? Mind, the battery was at about 30% at the time and I haven't charged it since I opened it...
