I just got a reply to an email I sent to nokia press services. It's not an answer to the issue but it's better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick since it implies that they're listening... Full email transcript below: -
[INDENT]Hello Dave,
Thank your for your enquiry. We are investigating the issue, so at this point we don't have any further comments to give.
Best regards,
Henna Pelkola

Subject: N97 Self Scratching Lens Cover
Does Nokia have any comment to make regarding the issue with the N97 lens coveer that causes the sliding lens cover to scratch the actual lens.
This is being reported in many mobile news sites and user forums, as demonstrated via a simple search on Google for "N97 lens". Link provided below for convenience...

good news, got to be the first step to the mass recall
is Dave going to be less grumpy now......😃
I think you have shot yourself in the foot with that email - as much as they will be inclined to give an answer they aren't going to respond to something like that as you have made your intentions clear that a response would be publicised.
I sense a recall on the horizon - prepare to be without phone for 3 weeks guys!!
Nope. Dave'll be grumpy for a while yet. Dave waited excitedly for 6 months to get this phone and within 2 weeks the shine wore off...
😞

Maybe. But it's the first time anyone at Nokia has even publically acknowledged that there might be an issue...

I think dave needs a big hug {{{{dave}}}}
I do not know how many N97 Nokia sold so far .. but I think that instead of being recalled, it will be much easier and cheaper to give to everyone having this problem a len's conver replacement
I don't see a TOTAL recall on the horizon.
For one thing, not all users have noticed the problem--though until the lens cover clearance is corrected, it could be a future problem. Do we know that all versions have the same clearance issues--maybe it was just a bad batch from China?
Some have minor scratches which do not affect photos/video.
For example, mine has a very fine scratch in the area between the lens aperture and the LEDs that does not affect my photos. I suspect that I could use a crevice-filler solution designed for fine scratches and not even be able to see mine.
Since some people have very problematic issues, I would expect Nokia to set up some method to pre-qualify people (i.e. send in a photo for evaluation) and then they would send a return mailer/voucher to get the phone serviced.
UPDATE: Another blog user has discovered the details of the reason for the scratching. There is a small piece of metal under the lens cover which is used to detect lens covered/uncovered and THIS is what is scratching the display (not generic grit). Evidently, it is not placed in the same location from phone-to-phone so the group of users affected needs to be determined. See hyperlink for a few more details and photos:

Nokia: "I'm sorry, Dave. I'm afraid I can't do that."

Yeah, but not a Xenon one...

Nokia: "They're all dead! Everybody's dead, Dave!"
davecozens: "Hold on... are you trying to tell me everybody's dead?"
Nokia: *mumbles* "Shouldn't have let him out in the first place"
😃
and those that aren't dead grab their N97's to take a photo of grumpy dave ..... but it's pointless ........ as their lenses are all shot to sh*t
😊
